I created a recovery USB for my HP ZBook 15 G5 using the HP Cloud Recovery Tool. After the recovery media was completed, I browsed through the files to inspect the preloaded drivers.
Inside the Drivers > Graphics folder, I only found two subfolders: one for Intel and another for AMD graphics. There is no NVIDIA folder or any files related to NVIDIA graphics drivers.
Since my ZBook 15 G5 uses the motherboard labeled as “DSC P2 4GB I7-8850H WIN,” which I believe includes a discrete NVIDIA GPU, I was expecting the recovery USB to include the NVIDIA graphics driver as well.
Is this normal behavior? Will the HP Image Assistant install the NVIDIA driver after Windows installation, or do I need to manually download and install it? If the system is supposed to include NVIDIA drivers, why are they not present in the recovery USB?
Thanks.

Hi @venom_123,
Welcome to HP Support Community!
We noticed that this thread hasn't had any updates in a while since your original post; while this is rare, we didn't want this post to remain unanswered, so, here's the solution to your query. We hope it helps you and everyone viewing this post 😊
No NVIDIA Driver in Recovery USB:
-
HP's Cloud Recovery Tool sometimes includes only the minimum essential drivers needed to get Windows up and running, especially just enough to boot with basic display functionality.
Your Configuration — “DSC P2 4GB I7-8850H WIN”:
-
This label strongly suggests you have a discrete NVIDIA Quadro GPU (likely a Quadro P2000 or P1000) paired with an Intel CPU.
-
“DSC” refers to Discrete Switchable Graphics, a setup where Intel handles light graphics tasks and NVIDIA kicks in for heavier loads.
-
What Happens After Recovery?
After a clean reinstall using the HP recovery USB:
-
Windows initially loads using the Intel GPU.
-
HP Image Assistant (HPIA) or HP Support Assistant can then be used to:
-
Detect missing drivers.
-
Download and install the appropriate NVIDIA Quadro drivers, chipset updates, BIOS, etc.
-
Additionally:
-
Windows Update may also install a basic NVIDIA driver if HPIA isn’t used.
-
Install HP Image Assistant (if not already bundled post-recovery):
-
Download: HP Image Assistant (official)
-
Run it and let it scan your system.
-
It will recommend and install the correct NVIDIA driver and other missing updates.
-
-
Manual Option (if preferred):
-
Select your OS and download the latest NVIDIA Quadro driver listed under Driver-Graphics.
