Hi,
I have an HP Pavilion 17 Notebook PC that doesn't boot. The diagnostic test indicates a problem with the hard drive. The failure ID is Q4PP03-7GS98A-MFPWL1-60UC03. Would you please interpret this number for me.
Also, can you interpret this Product configuration ID for me: 0972110002405f10000620180?
HP Pavilion 17 Notebook PC
Product Number J9N59UA#ABA
Serial Number [edit]
Born on Date 01/26/2015
System Board ID 227F
Product configuration ID 0972110002405f10000620180
System Board CT number PEMKD018J7X2Z9
BIOS version F.43
Thank you for your assistance.
Thanks for your help.

Hi, @Fidlier
You can enter the failure code in the box at the link below...
https://support.hp.com/us-en/contact-hp
I do not know where you will be able to decode the product configuration ID.

Sadly to say: Most of the time the 24 char failure id indicates the HDD is failing and it needs to be replaced. Is it still under warranry ? If Yes, please call HP for a replacement.
In the US:
http://www8.hp.com/us/en/contact-hp/phone-assist.html#section1
or HP technical support: 800-474-6836. If you live outside the US/Canada Region please click the link below to get the support number for your region.

What is its Operating system ?
Regards.

Yes, the hard drive has likely failed. The help I am requesting is for someone to parse the two IDs for me as I cannot find a public-facing database I can use for that purpose. I don't know the OS on the disk; how would that help interpret the diagnostic?
Thanks.

Thank you, Paul. The failure code is 303 and so I will pull the drive and see what I can salvage.
This is not my laptop and I can only guess that the OS was Windows 8.1. HP has downloadable drivers for WIndows 10 but thay are dated 2015. Do you think the current retail version of Windows 10 will install and operate properly?
Thanks, Mark

You're very welcome, Mark.
The notebook you are working on is a HP PAVILION NOTEBOOK - 17-F115DX
Link to the specs...It originally came with W8.1
https://support.hp.com/us-en/document/c04507277
Link to the support page...It does have W10 drivers.
If the previous owner had done the free upgrade to W10, you can reinstall W10 for free by using the media creation tool at the link below using another Windows PC and see if W10 installs without needing activation. You will need an 8 GB flash drive for the usb installer.
https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-download/windows10
If you are asked to enter a product key during the installation process, check the 'Skip' box.
If the PC had been upgraded to W10 before the hard drive failed, then W10 will automatically activate once you are connected to the internet.
If it needs activation, you can buy a W10 key from the Windows Store.
Also, here is a free way that should work to reinstall W8.1...
Install W8.1 by creating the Microsoft installation media using another Windows PC...Your notebook came with W8.1 64 bit so make the W8.1 64 bit installation media.
https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-download/windows8ISO
If you are asked to enter a product key during the installation process, use this generic key.
This is the generic key for W8.1 'standard.'
334NH-RXG76-64THK-C7CKG-D3VPT
If you had to enter a generic product key, manually change the generic product key to the W8.1 'standard' key in your PC's BIOS in the PC settings menu.
If you had to enter a key, after you get W8.1 installed, you will need to run the free utility I zipped up and attached below, that will show you show the W8.1 product key in your PC's BIOS.
I have also zipped up and attached below, the Microsoft tool which hopefully will transfer the ISO file to a DVD or usb flash drive so it is bootable.
Then you can install the available drivers and software from your PC's support page.
