HP 255 G7
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

Got a new laptop as part of enrolment in my university. It was working fine for over a month, but starting today it has refused to boot with stopcode critical_process_died.

What I have tried so far:

  • Using Advanced Recovery Options:
    • System Restore:
      • Succeeded; no effect, same stopcode.
    • Booting into Safe Mode:
      • Can't boot into any Safe Mode option: critical_process_died
    • Ran DISM and SFC from WinPE command prompt, specifying C: as the drive to check:
      • No effect; no errors or violations found by either tool.
    • Ran chkdsk c:
      • No issues found.
  • Running HP Components Tests:
    • Fast: All Passed
    • Quick: All Passed
    • Extensive: All Passed

I'm out of ideas. The only remaining thing I've yet to try is the Reset PC option in the Advanced Recovery Options. This is an unacceptable solution as I have important school work saved on it. As this is a new laptop, I had yet to begin regular backups. So, at the very least, I need some way of resetting the PC without losing these important files. But that's assuming there won't be the same stopcode interrupting the process of refreshing Windows, which is another reason I am hesitant to try it.

To reiterate, this is a brand-new HP 255 G7 laptop with Windows 10 Home 64bit, pre-installed when the device was delivered to me on 5 Oct. The device has been kept clean, dust-free, in a cool and dry environment (which is a home computer room).

Thanks in advance for assistance.

Nevermind. Went ahead and used Reset PC. Now it boots but there's another issue, which I've posted in another thread.
