I think the title says it all, I've had Update issues before that were a total nightmare.  Can someone help me with Udates to Pre-Install to get things up and running fast?  I've done this before with a Retail Version of Windows 7 but not after an HP System Recovery Install like this one.  I'm not in the pc right now so can't check if it has SP1 even installed?  I'm guessing not because it is like a 2011 laptop?

Thanks, pcpunk

Unfortunately for what you need, HP only has recovery media for Win7 that will return your PC to its ORIGINAL condition.  If that sends you back all the way to SP1, then you will be faced with HUNDREDS of updates -- I know because I recently restored an old HP desktop and that's what happened to me.

However, if you follow the directions below, you can then reduce the wait time for Win7 updates from days to a few hours -- as this is what I did:

Download these updates before starting the installation process and copy them to a USB flash drive.

NOTE: If Win7 is not already running SP1, then you need to download and install it before running these Updates.

Disconnect the network cable or disable the WiFi.

Install these two updates from the flash drive before connecting to the network and running Windows Update.

KB Links:
https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/3083710
https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/3172605

Have to stop the Windows Update service BEFORE installing each of these: net stop wuauserv

NOTE: KB3172605 supercedes KB3161608 which supercedes KB3102810

If you have a problem with KB3172605, post back as there is a separate fix for that.

Then, after you re-enable Windows Update, it should only take 2-4 hours to find and do the updates, not days.

Good Luck

@pcpunk, welcome to HP Forums, this is a great place to get support, find answers and tips.
Thank you for posting your query, I'll be more than glad to help you out.

I understand that you want to know how to avoid the update issues when you do a new install from HP Recovery Manager.

Don't worry as I have a few steps that should help fix this issue.

You may disable the windows automatic update to stop these issues.

And here's the step by step guide for you listed below:

1. Click on Start > Run and type services.msc

2. In the window that opens, look for the Windows Update entry in the right pane.

3. Double click on Windows Update. In the window that opens, click the Stop service option, and then set the startup type as Disabled.

4. Click on OK to validate.

Let me know how that works.

I hope you have a good day ahead.

Rainbow23, sorry not to get back right away, must have this account linked to an alternate email.  I was Wrestling with Windows 7 updates and it's getting the best of me lol.  Let me get back with what I've done, but will have to compile it to make sense.  I'll give it a go now.  First off this is the Error Code:  Update Error Code 80070308

Basically I installed W7 from Recovery Partiton as said.  Then I Set Windows Update to "Never Check for Updates" from the begining with a reboot, and set the computer to never sleep etc.

Then installed two Rollups that are supposed to mitigate the Update process.

Then Installed the .NET Framework 4.6.2 with the Offline Installer.  The Ran Check for Updates and got all but 47 Updates installed.

Then I installed a few more Rollups that I've used in the past and got those 47 Updates Installed.

Now running into the same thing with the newly Downloaded Updates but don't know where to go from here?  Any pertinent info you want before I create this next post?

P.S. I love Windows 7 and my HP's so much but all this Update stuff is really rough on us mortals.

Thanks, pcpunk

Rainbow23, I got it all done brother.  Only lost a little hair during the process, well, what little I got left.  I would love to learn how to do this a little smoother in the future if you want to direct me.  Last time I did it the same way, but I was using a newer Image from an iso I got directly from M.S.  This Image came from the Recovery Partition as you know, so it was much older, and think that is why it stalled out on me a few times.  Please please link me to some good knowledge as how to do this.  I do some computer repair also, not a lot but still, if I cannot help folks with my favorite OS then what shall I do?

Thanks, Pcpunk

@pcpunk, thank you for your reply, I'll be more than glad to help you.

I understand that you wanted to know how to install Win 7 OS from HP Recovery Manager.

In order to isolate the issue, please let us know the model number of the unit from the link: http://hp.care/2bygf7l

Let me know if this works.

I hope you have a good day ahead.

My question is, how to Mitigate the install of Windows Seven, not how to use the HP Recovery Manager.  Using the Recovery Manager uses an older Image than one can obtain on the M.S. Site, therefore it will need a different install proceedure than I'm used to, certain Rollups and .NET Framework.xx.  I really need to be able to do this in less time, or else folks won't be happy with their HP Experience? and we don't want that right?

I thought I left this in the first Post...sorry.
