I just bought a brand new Omnibook 5. I let it charge a bit with an USB C cable with 80 Watt, but it won't turn on when I press the power button. Am I doing anything wrong? Is it broken?

Hi @ragnar21
Welcome to the HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query.
I understand that your brand-new HP OmniBook 5 is not turning on properly. Although the screen remains completely blank.
Could you please check whether you can hear the fan running and whether any keyboard lights are illuminated? Let’s go through a few checks to determine what may be happening and whether the issue is likely to be fixable.
Power and battery check
- Even though the keyboard lit up, ensure the device is plugged into power and charging.
- Some Omnibook models require a minimum charge to fully power the display.
Try a hard reset
- Disconnect the power adapter.
- Press and hold the power button for 15–20 seconds.
- Reconnect power and try turning it on again.
This clears any temporary hardware initialization glitches.
External display test
- If you have an HDMI or USB-C to HDMI connection, try connecting the Omnibook to an external monitor or TV.
- If the external display works, the issue is likely with the laptop screen or internal display connection.
Brightness and display keys
- Make sure the brightness isn’t turned all the way down.
- Try pressing the display toggle key (often Fn + F4/F5/F7, depending on model) to switch between internal and external display modes.
Keyboard lighting behavior
- The fact that the keyboard no longer lights up suggests the laptop isn’t completing POST (Power-On Self-Test).
- Hearing accessibility voices means some part of the system is powering, but the graphics/display subsystem may have failed.
Since the laptop is brand new and the screen never displayed properly, this points to a hardware defect — either the display panel, display cable, or motherboard graphics.
This is not something that can be fixed safely at home without proper tools and replacement parts.
Take care and have an amazing day!
