Hi. I',m getting the imminent hard drive failure message and have run smart diagnostics which the hard drive fails. I have made HP recovery discs and have backed up data. I intend to put a new hard drive in,use recovery discs and restore data. The failing hard drive is 750Gb WD 7500 BPVT-60 HXZ T1 ,spindle speed 5400. I intend to replace with a WD 7500 BPVX,spindle speed 5400,750 Gb. Will this be compatible or should I be looking for exactly the same product number?

You are basically going to replace it with the same model 🙂 You shouldn't have any problems doing so. Pretty much any 2.5" SATA drive should work on the laptop as long as it physically fits in the slot so no issues should occur there.
Do you need help restoring/migrating your data?
What is the reason behind the drive failure? What does the S.M.A.R.T. status tells you?

Thank you for your reply. It's not giving a reason for the failure. The Smart scan immediately comes up with failure. The error code has changed slightly on the 2 times I have run it.The second changes are in brackets: QOC49T-5LS83E (G)-XDO15G-608803 (60F903).
I've used this laptop heavily over the past few years and figured the failure maybe just wear and tear. I can't hear unusual noises though.
I've backed up all data and was planning to take an image with Acronis to restore onto the new hard drive (sounds great in theory!)

The Western Digital Blue series seem to have a 2 year warranty, and the Black a 5 year warranty and if I understand correctly your HDD does a lot of work.
and I thought it may be a consideration.

No it is not vital, the factors I would consider are the transfer rates, and I think both types are acceptable.
Coupled with that is the DB noise factor quoted and perhaps the power consumption if you are off the grid and on battery power for many hours.
So you will not make a bad choice, just a balance against cost per gigabyte and life expectancy.

As doughjohn suggested, replacing your failed HDD with a new one of the same rpm is not vital. RPM and capacity rarely havei mpact on the compatibility of a drive with a computer. The most important thing for the replacement drive is to use the same connection (SATA, PATA, SAS, etc.) as the computer and to be able to physically fit in it.
WD Black is indeed another option, but have in mind that the higher rpm means more heat and vibration output which may or may not be important to you. Differences between our WD Blue and WD Black would be in the budget, performance of the computer (speed, battery life, head and vibration capacity), and different warranty.

Hi Thank you once again for the replies. Sorry I'm late getting back-been busy making sure everything is backed up before pulling the plug on the old HDD.I use this lap top for for accounts, emailing, and some video editing. I don't use it for gaming. I'm not too concerned about the warranty. The existing HDD 5400 rpm has been ok for my needs and until recently as the HDD began to play up speed has been OK. I don't think I want more heat produced as the fan goes quite frequently as it is ( I'm going to take the opportunity to give the vents a good clean when I remove the HDD). I'm leaning towards a straight replacement-5400rpm. From what I've described do you think I need a 7200 rpm? Would I notice a substantial improvement in performance?
