Hi @Rmet,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query. I will be glad to assist you.

To boot your HP laptop using a removable hard drive (or a new hard drive), follow these steps:

1. Verify Hardware Connection

  • Ensure the removable hard drive is properly connected to the laptop using a USB cable or appropriate interface.
  • If it's an internal hard drive, confirm that it is securely installed in the laptop.

2. Access the BIOS/UEFI Settings

  • Power on the laptop and repeatedly press the Esc or F10 key until the BIOS/UEFI menu appears. The exact key may vary depending on your laptop model.
  • Navigate to the Boot Options or Boot Order section.

3. Set the Boot Priority

  • Locate the removable hard drive in the boot order list.
  • Move it to the top of the list to prioritize booting from the hard drive.
  • Save the changes and exit the BIOS (usually by pressing F10).

4. Prepare the Hard Drive for Booting

  • If the removable hard drive does not contain a bootable operating system:
    1. Create a bootable drive using tools like Rufus or the Windows Media Creation Tool on another computer.
    2. Install an operating system (e.g., Windows or Linux) onto the removable hard drive.
  • If you intend to clone an existing system onto the new drive, use cloning software such as Macrium Reflect or AOMEI Backupper.

5. Test Booting

  • Restart the laptop and ensure the hard drive is recognized.
  • If the OS does not load, verify the hard drive’s boot files and partition configuration.

6. Troubleshooting

  • Drive Not Recognized: Ensure the hard drive is formatted and initialized in GPT or MBR, compatible with your BIOS settings.
  • Boot Error Messages:
    • If you see "No bootable device," confirm that the OS is properly installed.
    • If the drive isn’t detected, try connecting it to another USB port or computer to rule out hardware issues.

Please mark this post as “Accepted Solution” if the issue is resolved and if you feel this reply was helpful click “Yes”.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a great day ahead!
