Example: HP Envy 17m
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

My Windows 10 OS got screwed up from an MS update.  I tried to restore from a system image which i created the day before.  It fails at about the 5% complete point with STATUS_WAIT_1 (0x80070001).  I found nothing useful searching on this error.

I used the Windows 10 System Repair disk I created from the same computer I am trying to restore.

I tried to reinstall Windows 10 from a DVD.  When it gets to the place where you select a drive to install Windows there is no drive available.

How do I get the hard drive to show up so I can install Windows 10 again?

I tried diskpart from a command prompt.  No disks are listed.

Hi:

I recommend that you run the hard drive diagnostics test (F2) in the BIOS and see what it reports.

I would also try making a bootable W10 USB installer using the media creation tool at the link below and see if that works instead of using the DVD.

I did run the diagnostic test and the drive tested out OK.

I think it might be something to do with the fact that when you do a system image restore using the Windows System recovery disk and the system image, it formats the hard drive.  At least, I checked the box to format the drive.

I just ordered HP recovery media for my model laptop.  I am praying that the recovery media will "see" the drive.

In the meantime, I'll create a USB install media and give it a try.

Wow.  Using a USB instead of installing from the dvd worked.  I'm not 100% sure that was it because before I tried the USB option, I gave it one last shot to restore from the system image.  When the it started to restore this time, I saw it first restore the UEFI partition which I hadn't seen happen in my previous attempts.  Of course the operation failed on the c drive 2 hours in.

I just ordered a new 1TB SSD.  I figure if I have to re-set this whole thing up again, I might as well do it on a new SSD drive.

Thanks for the advice!  I was about to go buy a new laptop out of sheer frustration.  🙂

You're very welcome.

You are really going to enjoy the increased performance a SSD adds.
