Microsoft Windows 11

I completed the windows 11 update and soon after my screen completely froze so I powered off the computer manually and when I attempted to power it back on I received th screen with Boot Device Not Found Hard Disk- (3FO) and when I go to F2 to do a system diagnostics. I then ran a hard drive check and received no hard drive installed. Please check that the power and data cables are connected properly error.

Hi @CraftingPains,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

It sounds like there could be a few potential issues causing this problem. Here's a step-by-step guide to help you troubleshoot and resolve the issue:

1. Check Physical Connections

  • Turn off your computer and unplug it from the power source.
  • Open your computer case and ensure that both the power and data cables connected to your hard drive are securely plugged in.
  • If possible, try using different SATA cables and different SATA ports on your motherboard to rule out any issues with the cables or ports.

2. Verify Hard Drive Detection in BIOS/UEFI

  • Restart your computer and enter the BIOS/UEFI settings (usually by pressing a key like F2, F10, DEL, or ESC during boot).
  • Navigate to the section that displays connected storage devices or SATA configuration.
  • Check if your hard drive is detected in the BIOS/UEFI. If it's not detected, there may be a hardware issue with the hard drive or the motherboard's SATA controller.

3. Reset BIOS/UEFI Settings

  • In the BIOS/UEFI settings, find the option to reset to default settings or load optimized defaults.
  • Save the changes and exit the BIOS/UEFI. Then restart your computer and check if the hard drive is detected.

4. Test Hard Drive on Another Computer

  • If possible, connect the hard drive to another computer and see if it's detected. This will help determine if the issue is with the hard drive itself or the computer's hardware configuration.

5. Check for Windows Update Issues

  • Sometimes, issues can occur during the Windows update process that affect hardware detection.
  • If you can access Windows recovery options, try rolling back the Windows 11 update to see if it resolves the issue.
  • Alternatively, you can try performing a clean install of Windows 11 using a bootable USB drive.

6. Test with a Live USB/CD

  • Create a bootable USB drive or CD/DVD containing a live Linux distribution or a diagnostic tool like Hiren's BootCD.
  • Boot from the live USB/CD and see if the hard drive is detected. This can help determine if the issue is specific to the Windows installation or if it's a hardware problem.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
