My operating system is stored on an external D drive. When I shut the computer off and turned it back on, now says no system found

Hi  @LindainTexas

Welcome to the HP Support Community!

Thanks for reaching out!

I understand on how it must feel to see a “No OS  found” message, I see that you mentioned operating system is stored on an external drive.

Could you kindlt share the exact HP model of your computer?

Also kindly confirm the below details :

  • Was the external D drive connected via USB or another interface when you restarted?

  • Do you hear or see the drive spinning/lighting up when the system powers on?

  • Is the external drive detected in the BIOS/UEFI setup menu at startup?

And here are few steps you can try :

  • Check BIOS boot order: Restart your PC, press Esc/F10/F2 (depending on your model), and confirm the external drive is listed as the first boot device.

  • Test with another PC: Connect the external drive to a different computer to confirm if the OS partition is still accessible.

I hope this helps.

I'm an HP Employee.
