OMEN 16.1 inch Gaming Laptop PC 16-b1000 (603T6AV)
Microsoft Windows 11

Hi Community,

I recently faced an issue with my Omen 16, where I was working on Laptop battery and as soon as it reached 15% level i got the pop-up of connecting charger. Just a moment later the screen went black, so i thought it would be issue with power so i connected charger but since then the PC is behaving strange with below observations:

1. The screen is blank/black.

2. The system does not boot to windows most of the time, sometimes it boots but i can only access on the external monitor (so this is only sometimes like 1 in 10).

3. When it's working and i do restart then no boot, so luckily sometimes it do boot as i said in point 2.

4. While its working on external monitor, i tried disconnecting the hdmi then also no switching to the internal monitor of laptop, if again hdmi connected it shows everything on external monitor.

5. Recently when i restarted and soon disconnected hdmi, it luckily showed up on internal display and also booted but after 2 or 3 mins the screen went black, connected hdmi and then i can see the windows there.

6. After then i restarted again and nothing is happening at all now (tried more than 20 times hard/forced restart). only it powers up and keylights on fans running but nothing on external or internal monitor.

The remedies i followed so far:

1. Reset the windows, but still same.

2. Hard restart with power button pressing 30 sec. while all cables disconnected, then also same.

3. Removed battery cable and pressed power button 30 sec and restart, still same.

4. Somewhere i found that removing Cmos battery and reinsert will do, but i couldn't find cmos battery on motherboard or anywhere, so assuming it's integrated with main battery, so point 3 applies here if I am right, so still same.

5. Also tried removing and testing on single RAM, but still issue is same.

While i got into system on external monitor i tried to find out recent updates in system and also looked for areas like device manager and i found:

1. There was a recent update of BIOS F.20 2 days ago.

2. In Device manager under monitors there is only external monitor but no Internal Generic Monitor found.

I am frustrated at the moment that it's now only 1.5 years since i bought this PC and facing such issue. I also tried reaching service center and they say motherboard might be defective. But as can see that it randomly starts working on external PC so motherboard is OK, also the screen worked for 2 mins in one trial so hope screen is also not faulty.

I tried almost everything except rolling back BIOS which i have no clue.

Please let me know if i can get help from the HP community if someone has faced such issue with them.

Hi @dils05

Welcome to the HP support community.

I understand you're experiencing an issue with your HP device, and I apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused. I'm here to help you today.

I'm sorry to hear about the issues you're experiencing with your OMEN 16 gaming laptop. It sounds like you've already gone through a lot of troubleshooting steps. Here are some additional suggestions you can consider to potentially resolve the problem:

Since you mentioned that the issues began after a recent BIOS update, rolling back the BIOS might help. Here’s how you can do that:

Boot into BIOS:

  • Insert the USB into your laptop and power it on while pressing Esc repeatedly until the Startup Menu appears.
  • Select F10 to enter BIOS.

Use the USB to Flash BIOS:

  • If there's an option to update or roll back the BIOS from USB, follow the on-screen instructions.

Step 2: Check Display Settings

External Monitor Settings: When using the external monitor, check display settings (right-click on the desktop and select Display settings) to ensure the laptop's internal display isn't disabled.

Keyboard Shortcut: Try using the keyboard shortcut (usually Fn + F4 or Fn + F5, depending on your model) to toggle between display outputs.

Step 3: Hardware Checks

Reseat RAM: Since you've tried a single RAM stick, ensure both RAM modules are properly seated. If possible, test with known good RAM from another laptop.

Inspect Connections: If you're comfortable, check internal connections (especially the display cable) for any looseness or damage.

Check for Overheating: Ensure that the laptop is not overheating, as thermal issues can cause display problems.

Step 4: Boot in Safe Mode

  1. Attempt Safe Mode: If you can get a display on the external monitor, try booting into Safe Mode:
    • Press F8 or Shift + F8 repeatedly after powering on to access the recovery options, and choose Safe Mode.

Step 5: Perform a Hard Reset Again

  1. Disconnect All Peripherals: Unplug all devices and external connections (including power).
  2. Remove Battery (if removable): If your battery is removable, take it out.
  3. Press and Hold Power Button: Hold the power button for about 30 seconds to discharge residual power.
  4. Reconnect and Restart: Reinsert the battery (if applicable), plug in the power adapter, and try to power on.

I hope this helps! Keep me posted.
