Yes but the HP recovery Environment turns grey when highlighted and in brackets it says disabled:the partition has been removed.

Thats new.  Never seen that happen before.  Well i guess then the only option is to manually reinstall Windows

I assume I will then have to buy the media as media did not come with notebook and updated to win 10 before i could create any recovery discs.

no not at all.  Microsoft allows you to download Windows 8.1 onto a flash drive using their Media creation tool found here.  The only problem is that Windows wont have all drives so you will need to install them.  What is the full model of your laptop so i can get the correct drivers?

What size flash drive would you recomend?  I have tried dowloading on to a 32g but not enough space.
