My SSD died and I replaced it with one of the same size. I had updated from Windows 8 to 8.1 to 10 before having the SSD problems.
The HP recovery media I created from my recovery partition on the failed drive kept crashing, so I attempted a clean install using MS WIndow software. However, I received the message that the windows licwense on my BIOS was invalid.
I called HP and ordered the USB HP Recovery Kit after being assured that this would solvethe invalid windows license key issue. It did not. I received this error message after I updated to both windows 8.1 and 10. That is, I cannot activater windows, and cannot find the key to use to activate.
How do I find my windows license key number and how do I determine what version of windows to which it applies?
TIA
Ron

If the problem persists perform this other method:
In Search, type slui 4, and then select slui 4 from the search results.
Click the down arrow under Select your country or region, select the name of your country or region, and then click Next.
Call the telephone number provided on the Call and provide your installation ID screen. Be prepared to enter the series of numbers listed under Installation ID.
Follow the instructions from the telephone system. When provided with the confirmation ID, write the numbers down.
On the Call and provide your installation ID screen, click Enter confirmation ID.
On the Enter your confirmation ID screen, type the numbers into fields A through H, in the same sequence as provided by the telephone system, and then click Activate Windows.
If product activation was successful, a success screen is shown and you are done. If product activation is not successful, follow the steps in the Activate Windows 10 over the Internet section of this document; or, if Windows 10 came pre-installed on your computer, you can perform an HP System Recovery.

Thank you Gold_Master
Unfortunately, none of the webpages you suggested address my issue.
My issue is that I do not have the license key printed out in any of the documentation which came with my laptop (nor is there a sticker from MicroSoft with the license number on it), and the license number is somewhere on my BIOS, but Microsoft says it is invalid. I had a valid woindows license from HP until my SSD died. With the replacement SSD, and using HP's latest recovery kit USB, I still do not have a valid license.
Any further suggestions will be greatly appreciated. TIA.
