Looks like this laptop was originally a Win 10 machine. It upgraded to Win 11. The touchpad isn't working. The person I'm helping isn't sure when that started.

OK, I thought I'd go to HP's website, lookup the laptop, and download the Elan touchpad driver to reinstall it. I guess I'd try the Win 10 version of the driver if there's nothing for Win 11. However, HP offers no drivers for this laptop!

The webpage says "There is no software or drivers available for your product" but tells me "Your device qualifies for HP SmartFriend for persisting issues." So, am I supposed to pay for SmartFriend and then HP will give me a link to the driver via SmartFriend? Since when are the drivers not available for download directly?

Windows 11 installs an I2C HID Device driver for the touchpad but reports that the device cannot start. I already tried a few different Elan touchpad driver downloads that I found in a couple different places on the Internet but they didn't work. It would seem I need just the right one. Where can I find the correct Elan touchpad driver for this laptop?

Hi @Retwror,

Welcome to the HP Support Community!

Thanks for reaching out!

Sorry for the inconvenience caused don’t worry let me help you.

To better understand the issue, could you please provide a few more details?

Could you please share the exact HP laptop model number

Here are a few troubleshooting steps you can try :

  • Check Windows Update: Sometimes Microsoft pushes updated touchpad drivers through Windows Update. Go to Settings > Windows Update and install all optional updates.
  • Device Manager Reset: In Device Manager, right‑click the I2C HID Device, choose Uninstall device, then restart the laptop. Windows may reinstall a working driver automatically.
  • BIOS Settings: Verify in BIOS/UEFI that the touchpad is enabled. Occasionally, it can be disabled at firmware level.
  • Generic Precision Driver:  You can try updating the driver manually by selecting Update driver > Browse my computer > Let me pick from a list and choosing “HID‑compliant touchpad” or “Microsoft Precision Touchpad.”
  • External Mouse Check: Just to confirm, does an external USB mouse work fine? That helps rule out broader input issues.

I hope this helps.
