How do I get my notebook to start up normally with my screen not working

Basically -- you can't.  Why? Because while you CAN use an external monitor, that will not display until after Windows is loaded because it needs the Windows drivers.

So, you could use that to boot into Windows and login, but you will not see anything prior to that due to the drivers not having been loaded yet.

So, if you define a "normal startup" as seeing the boot and loading information prior to Windows loading, that can't be done with an external monitor.
