As to having wifi on when doing the clean install, it really doesn't matter. When you get to the step asking about getting updates, click NO.

Good luck!

Thanks, I was talking about the Wireless Mouse Reciver Chip.  Should that not be plugged in while doing an Clean Install?

I'm even having issues getting it to boot from a Rufus UEFI Created USB?  I will plug away at it some more.

Thanks again

Oh, your Bluetooth mouse?  I don't use one.

If you remove it, your trackpad should work or you can always plug in a wired mouse which will always be supported.

So I got the clean install done but now I can not get my computer to connect to WiFi! Thanks for the help so far. Any suggestions on this?

You will need to install the Windows 10 drivers provided by HP starting with the Intel chipset driver.

I'm not sure I CAN give you any more clarity. However I can say how much I agree that HP are well adrift of that required of them. Only by recruiting a united front do we perplexed owners have a chance of getting what we want & need in a format that will make it do-able for the majority of us. I will just reiterate some of the issues so far.

HP are faced with WIN 10 expanding much more than they bargained for. There has also occurred a very unexpected flaw in the Celeron processor chip which has led to the only possible solution which is a work-around by MS. That is a hardware flaw and it affects many machines built over the last 10 years that use that INTEL chip..

Coincident with that, MS keep on "upgrading" their OSystem and proudly present their failures as a triumph!! An "upograde"  follows a series of more minor "updates" and while it may also have additional features - it also contains all the latest updates.

The WIN10 OpSys can, as you know be tailored in all sorts of ways to suit particular preferences and individual quirks of different machines. An example of that might be the Drivers (software interfaces) need for a particular WiFi chipset or HDD. It also includes YOUR changes & preferences and there is a way to preserve these values as thay can then be applied to any new (updated or upgraded) versions. This saves you the laborious task of having to  set up your mouse, display, printer, and keyboard etc.  all over again. It is important to have a saved copy of this "Settings" file before you start - {I think!}. It's already in the System Restore area of your drive so this is a belt & braces suggestion.

Now, when you do that reload from scratch - the queston has to be asked "Do you really mean that?"

Most people will by now have a reeling brain because they never did want all this complexity nagging at their mind. Indeed their life might be filled with real trauma at this very moment and they just want their PC as a tool to help them with day to day problems. Not all of us want to be computer "experts" do we?

I have been dragged kicking and screaming into all these depths. I am now at last at the stage where I now know that there actually is a way to do a clean install of WIN10. Furthermore, I know that the necessary activation code is buried in BIOS and I do not therefore need to know it or supply it to MS in order to do the clean install.  They will not deny me.

I also know that I cannot expect to download this new system as an ISO file to the TARGET machine because there is insufficient room. That's the very problem! That's why I have to do the clean install. It does no good for me to wonder why if I supply additional disk-space in the form of a USB stick it STILL cannot be done . What I know is that I need to make this bootable USB drive on another machine with loads of disk-space. Yes and I will be using free software called RUFUS to make this new bootable memory stick for me. I just downlaod it to the "other" machine. That solution is fine if you happen to have the "other" machine facility. I would prefer something better than that really.

I've managed to do one such stick containing UBUNTU which is an entirely  different free operating system and which I am very strongly minded to use in place of WIN10. Yes and I made that disk on the HP Stream machine so I did, using ext USB memory and RUFUS. However, I am worried about overwriting WIN10 BEFORE I have proven that I can actually do a clean install from the bootable drive that contains WINDOWS. Therefore I await that "other" machine facility .

And so here we are! Waiting for me to tread softly softly into being able to describe to myself & others EXACTLY how to achieve these various goals. If I could be free and rid of WIN10 and also  gain some space on this tny drive - I would leap at the chance. Ubuntu might just be the answer.  However, if you ever decide that you want WIN10 back, you will need that settings file because by then it will have been over-written.  I hope you can follow all this because there will be questions - oh yes!!

I ought not to have to tread this path. However, I do and if it leads to a better outcome this Forum will be the first to hear of it!

I hope my words are of some comfort to you. I feel sure that when we get enough folks applying themselves to this problem we will find a proper "procedure" which any owner can follow fairly easily without the need of such deep understanding.

Sincerely,

BerryG

If I could give you extra Kudos for this I would do so, How come it has taken so long to find it? I have been lobbying for something like this for weeks! I have just stumbled on it. Can the URL be used to spread the word?

How do we get this up front for all those involved in the update struggle to read?

I want to thank you for this. It looks good and it looks right covering ALL the various needs of the slightly different models that share a small HDD - RAM and very probably the Celeron chip. Do you mention the BIOS update from HP?

Thanks again

Sincerely,

BerryG

The Crazy thing is they are still selling this inadequate SSD's in some of their other laptops.

https://store.hp.com/us/en/pdp/hp-14t---touch-option-available-1dp50av-1

They should just wipe Windows 10 from these machines and Install Linux.  Installing Windows 10 on one of these SSD's was irresponsible in my opinion.   Otherwise not a bad little machine.

Not just HP. Dell and Lenovo also sell laptops with 32 GB eMMC hard drives.

Try selling Linux to the average Joe or Jane.

They won't touch it.

I don't disagree with that!

is there a slot to install a 2nd drive in the motherboard?

if so, can it be used to hold thw windows 10?

HP Recommended

@tsylvia

On the Stream laptops there is no option to add a 2nd hard drive.

I'm curious as to whether the SSD can be replaced?  I don't see it in the Service Manual.
