HP 17-eo46us
Microsoft Windows 8.1 (64-bit)

I need recovery discs. None came w/laptop. Windows update of 11/11/21 fried my HP Pavilion 17 64 bit w/ Windows 10 OS. I only get a blue screen "Automatic Repair" facility when I turn on laptop. NOTHING IS ACCESSABLE on laptop. Of the 4 or so fixes offered my ability only allowed 2 to be tried, recover to before last Windows update or recover to a recovery point. For BOTH only one date was given, the date above of the Windows update. Trying both was fruitless. The later seemed to be working as it went into initialing mode for about 12 min but the a failed box popped up. It said that it failed while copying the registry from restore point and gave this number: 0x80070017. I do not know BIOS or b&w screen stuff although have worked there w/phone tech support guidance. It seems like I might have to lose all of my important files and do a system recovery. There is an option to do a recovery/restore from a cloud other than a local disc. But I do not know if that is available esp with no OS working to gain internet access. I think recovery discs would be best but need them first. I bought from Staples about 2014 and it had no accompanying recovery discs.

Hi:

HP no longer sells recovery disks for your PC, and if you were to use them, they would wipe your hard drive first, and reinstall W8.1.

That would rule out recovering any files you wanted to save.

I recommend that you do this...

Make a bootable W10 installation USB flash drive with the media creation tool from the link below.

You will need to have access to another Windows PC, running W7 64 bit or newer.

Download Windows 10 (microsoft.com)

After the flash drive is created, boot from it (turn on your PC, immediately tap the ESC key to get the menu of options, select the F9 boot options menu, and then select the USB flash drive and press the enter key).

You will need to select the version of W10 that your PC was upgraded to (probably W10 Home).

Then you will be asked to enter a product key.  Select the 'I don't have a product key' option.

Then you will be asked 'Where do you want to install Windows.?'

You want to install Windows over the existing Windows partition, so that it creates a Windows.old folder.

Do not delete or format any partitions.

After W10 installs, you can explore the Windows.old folder, find your old user profile and you can copy any files you need to save onto a portable hard drive, or into your new user profile on the reinstalled Windows.

Once you are sure you have gotten everything you can delete the Windows.old folder using the disk cleanup utility>cleanup system files button.

Nothing is lost when you stop the nonsense, you don't understand.

Probably you can save your date when downloading a "Media Creation Tool" (MCT)  from MS. You have to create a MCT Bootstick that gives you access to your personal files.

You always pay a high price when you don't have a backup and everything is on your C-Partition!
