OMEN by HP 16.1 inch Gaming Laptop PC 16-wf0000 ICTO Base Units

Omen 16 has been sitting (not used) for a year and a half. It was a gift to my son who didn't use it at all. He used it for a few days when he got it. I figure I would use it and turned it on after a year and a half. It was fine first and about 30 min into it, it started to misbehave.

1) The screen will just turn off along with the power light. The computer is still on as fans are still are still spinning. Then randomly the screen and power light will come back on only to turn off  again. It goes into this loop. I force turn off by holding the power button down.

2) when I turn it back on, it works but eventually it goes into screen, power light off/on loop again.

Yeah, the laptop is one and a half years old but total use time is maybe under a few hours. Very disappointed. I have 3 other Omen computers (2 desktops and 1 Omen 17 which rules) and they work flawlessly.

What is going on with my Omen 16?????

Hi @SWY1

Welcome to the HP Support Community! We're here to help you get back up and running.

Thank you for laying this out so clearly—and I truly regret the disappointment this has caused, especially when the device has barely seen any use. That kind of flickering behavior, where the screen and power light go dark while fans continue spinning, points to a deeper issue—likely tied to firmware, embedded controller (EC), or motherboard-level instability.

Let’s walk through a structured recovery path to help stabilize your OMEN 16.

Step-by-Step Recovery for Screen and Power Light Flickering

1. Perform a Hard Power Reset

This clears residual charge and resets embedded controller logic:

  • Power off the laptop completely.
  • Disconnect the power adapter and remove any connected peripherals.
  • Press and hold the power button for 15 seconds.
  • Reconnect power and boot up.

2. Update BIOS, EC Firmware, and Drivers

Outdated firmware can cause erratic power and display behavior:

  • Visit the HP OMEN 16-wf0000 driver page
  • Download and install:
    • Latest BIOS update
    • Embedded Controller (EC) firmware
    • Chipset drivers
    • Graphics drivers (both Intel and NVIDIA/AMD, depending on your configuration)

3. Run HP UEFI Diagnostics

This checks for hardware faults:

  • Restart the laptop and press F2 repeatedly to enter HP PC Hardware Diagnostics.
  • Run the Extensive System Test, focusing on:
    • Display panel
    • GPU
    • Motherboard and power delivery

4. Test with External Monitor

  • Connect the laptop to an external display via HDMI or USB-C.
  • Observe whether the flickering occurs on both screens or only the built-in panel.
  • If the external display remains stable, the issue may be isolated to the internal display cable or panel.

5. Inspect for Loose Display Cable or Internal Power Fault

If you're comfortable opening the device:

  • Power off and remove the bottom cover.
  • Check the display ribbon cable connection to the motherboard.
  • Look for signs of corrosion, looseness, or dust buildup near the connector.

If the issue persists after these steps, it may point to a failing embedded controller or intermittent GPU fault—especially if the flickering occurs even during BIOS or diagnostics screens.

I truly regret the frustration this has caused, especially given your positive experience with other OMEN systems. You deserve better from a premium device.

Let me know how far you get with these steps, and I’ll guide you further if needed.
