OMEN by HP 16.1 inch Gaming Laptop PC 16-wf0000 (755G1AV)

About a month ago my laptop suddenly turned off and wouldn't go on anymore. It was fully charged (as indicated by the LED on the back) and plugged in but it wouldn't do anything. The fans turned on for about 3 seconds every minute and the notebook became a bit hot. 15 minutes later the laptopscreen turned back on and everything went back to normal.

2 weeks ago the same happened, it randomly shut down. I tried to get it to work, but nothing worked. The next day it worked again.

Last week it wouldn't turn on  in one occasion, although the laptop was fully charged half an hour before. A few hours later it worked again.

I've done multiple hardware diagnostic system tests and component tests, nothing showed up. My drivers are up to date too.

Hi @Oliver127,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

I'd be glad to help you!

I’m sorry to hear about the trouble with your OMEN 16 laptop. Let's tackle this step-by-step to identify the root cause and try to resolve it. This type of intermittent issue can be frustrating, but it’s good to know you've already run diagnostic tests.

  • Do you recall if any software updates, new applications, or changes were made before the issue started?
  • Have you noticed any error messages, blinking LED patterns, or unusual behaviors right before or during the issue?
  • Does the laptop behave differently when running on battery power versus being plugged in?

Let's try these steps.

Hard Reset the Laptop:

  • Disconnect all external devices (USBs, external monitors, etc.).
  • Unplug the power adapter and press and hold the power button for 15-30 seconds to drain residual power.
  • Plug the charger back in and try turning it on.

Check Power Supply and Charging Port:

  • Ensure the power adapter is functioning properly by testing it on another compatible device or using another adapter with your laptop.
  • Inspect the charging port for dust, debris, or physical damage that could impact power delivery.

Monitor Temperature and Ventilation:

  • Ensure the vents are clear of dust and the fans are functioning properly. Use compressed air to clean the vents if needed.
  • Check the system temperature using HP Command Center or another monitoring tool to ensure it’s within a normal range.

Perform a BIOS Update (if applicable):

  • Check for a BIOS update on HP’s support website for your specific model. Follow the instructions carefully to update it. This can resolve potential firmware-related issues.

Boot in Safe Mode or Perform a System Restore:

  • If the system turns back on, boot it into Safe Mode to rule out conflicts caused by third-party software.
  • Alternatively, use System Restore to revert your laptop to a point when it is functioning normally.

Test with Battery Only or Without Battery:

  • If the laptop has a removable battery, try running it on AC power only (without the battery). If the issue disappears, the battery might be failing.

If the problem persists despite these steps, Given the recurring nature and no hardware issues detected in diagnostics, the motherboard, power delivery system, or another internal component could be failing intermittently.

I recommend you contact phone support for service options.

Hope this helps! Keep me posted for further assistance

Update: yesterday the laptop stopped working again. The laptop randomly froze. I got it to reboot and it gave me a "CMOS checkpoint failed" error. After that it immediately shut down again and I haven't been able to get it back on.

- No recent software updates or changes were made.

- No unusual behaviour, except the new CMOS checkpoint failed error.

- Having it plugged in or not seems to not make a difference. The charging LED works as usual.

- hard resetting did not work. It showed no sign of life.

- The adaptor works fine. I tested it on a similar omen laptop. Using another adaptor gives the same result: the charging LED shows that it's charging fine.

- the fans and laptop is clear of dust. Heating hasn't been a problem at all so far. I can't get into the command center as it won't turn on.

- I'm not able to get into the boot menu as it won't turn on.

- I'm not able to start the laptop in safe mode as it won't turn on.

- I can't remove the battery on the laptop. Tring to start it with or without power adapter seems to make no difference.

PS: I'll phone support this afternoon to get the laptop checked out. Will keep you updated.

I called support and went through all the previous mentioned solutions. Nothing worked, so the laptop will be send up for repairs.
