I updated the BIOS on my Omen 17 cm2xxx to f.13, and it started causing major instability.  So, I'm attempting to roll back to f.12.  I download f.12 from HP's website and created a USB recovery stick with the utility on another laptop, put it in my Omen, and hold windows + b and the power button etc....   but it just opens a screen telling me the BIOS files are missing or corrupt, and tells me to go to HP's website to create a USB recovery stick (which is what i already did).

It worked fine to update from f.12 to f.13, now my laptop is so unstable it's not usable. I can't even get through windows install without it crashing...

I have the f.12 BIN & SIG files, is there any way to get hpbiosuodrec64.efi so I can manually revert to f.12 and use my 1 year old laptop again? This is insane.

Hi @Matteusimus,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query. I will be glad to help you.

I understand how frustrating it must be to face instability after updating the BIOS on your OMEN 17 (cm2xxx series).

Since the system is unable to boot reliably and is rejecting the USB recovery stick, let’s try the built-in BIOS Recovery process directly from the PC first, as this can often restore a previous working version automatically without needing the external .EFI tool.

1. Step-by-Step: Try BIOS Restore from the PC

  1. Turn off the laptop completely (disconnect the charger and ensure it's fully shut down).
  2. Insert the USB recovery stick you created with the F.12 files.
  3. Reconnect the power adapter.
  4. Press and hold the Windows + B keys, and then press and hold the Power button for about 2–3 seconds, then release all keys.
  5. If successful, the laptop should power on and display an HP BIOS Update screen or begin a BIOS recovery process automatically.
  6. Follow the on-screen instructions if prompted.

⚠️ If the screen instead shows a “BIOS image missing or corrupt” message again, the USB key might not be structured correctly, or the files may not be compatible.

2. Correct USB Recovery Stick Setup

To manually set up the USB stick:

  1. Format the USB drive as FAT32.
  2. Create a folder named Hewlett-Packard\BIOS\New on the USB stick.
  3. Place the following files inside the New folder:
    • F.12 BIOS .BIN file
    • F.12 BIOS.SIG file
    • hpbiosupdrec64.efi (this is the BIOS update recovery executable)

⚠️ HP does not publicly provide hpbiosupdrec64.efi, but it is usually included in the official BIOS update package. You can extract it from the SPxxxxx.exe file you downloaded from HP's site using a tool like 7-Zip.

I hope this helps.

Take care, and have an amazing day!
