I have had this laptop for about 2 weeks now, but the usb on top left beside the power input wont recognise my external monitors or an external hard drive, yet the usb on top left does.
I need all usb's to function properly for what I bought it for.

@2306Plumber, Welcome to HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
I understand you're experiencing issues with one of the USB ports on your HP laptop not recognizing external monitors or hard drives, while another port works fine. Let's walk through some steps to troubleshoot and resolve this.
Identify the Port Type
- The port beside the power input is likely a USB-C port. Not all USB-C ports support DisplayPort (video output) or data transfer.
- Check your laptop's specifications to confirm whether that port supports external displays and hard drives.
Test with Known Working Devices
- Try connecting a different external monitor and hard drive to the problematic port.
- If none of them work, the issue may be with the port itself or its configuration.
Update Drivers and Firmware
- Ensure your system is fully updated:
- Go to Windows Settings > Windows Update and install all updates.
- Use HP Support Assistant to check for BIOS, chipset, and USB controller updates.
- Download HP Support Assistant: HP Support Assistant | HP® Support
Check Device Manager
- Press Win + X > Device Manager
- Expand Universal Serial Bus controllers
- Look for any warning signs (yellow exclamation marks).
- Right-click and choose Update driver or Uninstall device, then restart your laptop.
Power Cycle the Laptop
- Shut down the laptop completely.
- Disconnect all peripherals and power.
- Wait 30 seconds, then reconnect and power on.
