HP Notebook 17-x-116dx
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

After a Windows 10 Update, my laptop asked me to “Choose your keyboard Layout”. I chose US and then it goes to “Choose an Option”. “Continue, Use a Devise, Troubleshoot, turn off your pc”. The only option that works is “Turn Off your PC” The other options take me back to to the “Choose Your Keyboard Layout”. It appears that it is having difficulty rebooting after the update.

How do I fix a problem caused by a Windows Update without losing all of my files? It will not allow me to do a rollback or restore.

Yes, i use Avast too. I found this site and cane back to tell you. Seems like a lot of work, but if it works, great. I need to go buy an 8GB thumb drive to try this.....

Hi Sherriphelps,
My friend and I have the same problem. We've backed up our files using usb recovery drive, and are still searching for an answer to avoid restoring to factory. It happened to us 4 days ago.
Microsoft does not seem to have officially recognised it. If we find an answer we will post .

Thank you for the response. Hopefully we will be able to find a solution. I desperately need my laptop for work.

raymonlbarnes - Do you use AVAST? I just read something online about AVAST users reporting this issue after the update.

Just an FYI...i went to avast and they say they have seen it blamed on them but they don't see any issues. The link I sent above first said to delete Avast first, and now they say it's not necessary. I'm either case, my friend and I both have HPs and Avast, and we both can't boot. But we have one laptop that didn't try the upgrade, so we will use that to create our new usb bpot (separate from the HP Recovery boot usb). Going to do it in about 2 hours... fingers crossed!

Yes, that is GREAT! I just finished mine too. It took 2 hrs to create the usb and 2 hrs more to do the install. All my apps appear to be there. My touchpad stopped working in the middle of it after Avast complained about something. But it says it is 1803 now. I'm going to do that image backup right away. People say sometimes it works and then stops so I think the image should help. Glad you got bsck too! Woo goo!
