New hdd. Installed linux mint LDME3. Install all completes ok. On restart hdd is not recognised:
"Boot device not found"
"Please install an operating system on your hard disk"
"Hard Disk - (3FO)"
However, using Super Grub2 Disk the o/s can be started and runs fine. So the issue is purely with the laptop.
Legacy boot is enabled
Works perfectly with Windows hdd

OK, a suggestion -> try installing LMDE 3 in UEFI mode.
This will mean that Secure Boot may be off but Legacy mode should also be OFF
Go to "Advanced" tab in the BIOS -> Boot Options -> scroll down and ensure the boot mode is set to UEFI Native (without CSM)
Also, configure Boot order for UEFI to be with first boot device Notebook Hard Drive
Save the changes and exit
Try booting from LMDE 3 installation media (DVD or USB pendrive) and install it in UEFI mode.
Make sure no Windows related partitions are present during installaing (only swap and Linux related like ext4)
Please, let me know if any change

Hello @triplemaya
Welcome to the HP Support Community.
This message you refer to is not that it does not recognize HDD, it does not detect an operating system.
The problem is probably in the BIOS/UEFI settings.
- Is this related to 2 HDDs in the PC at the same time
- By the way, did you erase/format the entire HDD prior to install LM on it ? Was the PC with Legacy Mode ON when you installed LM ?
- Ensure the HDD with LM is inside the PC.
- Please, shutdown the computer using the power button (pressed and hold for a few seconds until PC powers off)
- Power the computer back on.
As soon as you press the power-on button, immediately begin hitting the Esc button (like tap-tap-tap) before any logo appears. This should open a HP Startup Menu >> https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GSN0qzXayUY
- Choose F10 for BIOS/UEFI options.
Go To "Advanced" tab -> Boot options
Configure the Legacy options and make sure the hard disk drive is the first one to boot from.
Save the changes and exit
Try again. Let me know how it goes

Hi Dean
Many thanks for this help.
Only one hdd is installed.
The hdd was formatted before installing LM onti.
Legacy mode was on when I installed it.
Going to the BIOS avanced settings, yes, Legacy is selected, and yes, the 'Notebook Hard Drive' is the first on the list to boot.
So nothing new to report. 😞

Hi and thanks again. That worked. (Still don't understand why!)
It was not possible to select UEFI Native (without CSM) on its own.
When I pressed entre to change, the only option was to have both UEFI Native (with CSM) and UEFI Native (without CSM) enabled. Saved changes. Exit. Installed the os again - though this time I used Ubuntu Mate because this copes better with UEFI.
All went fine. Hurrah. But when I go back into BIOS it is still in Legacy mode!?
I would quite like to understand what is going on as I would like to go back to Windows at some point, so I think I am going to need the BIOS in the same state as it was. It was in Legacy, but not working with the new install, so I am concerned that there is some other layer to all these settings that is relevant.
In addition:
There was a message that flashed by when booting from the install cd that included:
errata
firmware bug
tsm deadline erased
So this adds to my sense that some security thing may be working / not working properly.

By the way, you can have both Windows 10 and Linux Mint as a dual boot on the same HDD.
(my comments are above in red)

Yes, all working now. Thanks again.

Yes, exactly. That is the bit I so do not understand.
BTW windows works fine too. I have it on a second drive so I just swapped it back in and that works fine too. (Dual boot always winds up being more trouble that it is worth in my experience!)
If I may ask a different question on this thread, is it correct to assume that hte m.2 sata slot will work fine to use as the primary drive. I have an elitebook on which this is all set up when I got it. But doing a bit of research on the probook 650 g1 many people seem to have found that having fitted an m.2 to the emtpy slot this does not work on this model.

Hey,
Note - M.2 is just a form factor.
M.2 drives can come in SATA versions and or NVMe versions
So, if you refer to SATA M.2 , it should work fine.
Proper boot configurations may need to be adjusted in BIOS Advanced tab settings
