@Virulence, Welcome to HP Support Community,
Thank you for posting your query; I’m here to help by guiding you through steps to resolve this issue
Restart Your Computer
Before diving into more complex solutions, restart your laptop. Sometimes, a simple reboot can clear up system resources and improve performance.
Close Unnecessary Programs
Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager.
Check for any processes that are consuming excessive CPU or RAM, and end tasks that are not needed.
Try closing unnecessary background apps and see if Word starts responding again.
Run a Full System Scan
It’s possible that malware or viruses are causing the system to slow down.
Run a complete scan with your antivirus software or use Windows Defender to check for any threats.
Windows Defender: Open Start > Settings > Update & Security > Windows Security > Virus & Threat Protection, then click Quick Scan or Full Scan.
Check for Software Updates
Ensure that your system and Microsoft Word are both up to date.
Go to Start > Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update > Check for Updates.
Also, open Word and check for updates by going to File > Account > Update Options > Update Now.
Free Up Disk Space
A full hard drive can cause your system to slow down.
Disk Cleanup: Open This PC > Right-click on C: drive > Properties > Disk Cleanup.
Remove temporary files, system files, and other unneeded data.
Check for Startup Programs
Some programs start automatically with Windows, consuming resources.
Open Task Manager (Ctrl + Shift + Esc) > Startup tab.
Disable unnecessary startup programs to speed up your computer.
Check for Corrupted System Files
Run System File Checker (SFC) to fix potential system file corruption.
Open Command Prompt as Administrator:
Press Windows + X, and select Command Prompt (Admin).
Type: sfc /scannow and press Enter.
Wait for it to finish and restart your computer.
Run Disk Error Checking
Open This PC > Right-click C: drive > Properties > Tools > Check.
Let it scan and fix any issues on your drive.
Reinstall Microsoft Word (or Office)
If Word continues to be unresponsive, try reinstalling the program.
Go to Control Panel > Programs > Programs and Features, select Microsoft Office or Word, and click Uninstall.
After uninstalling, reinstall it from your Office account or the Microsoft Store.
I hope this helps.
Please feel free to reply here if you have any questions or if you need further clarification on any of the steps.
Take care and have a good day.
