HP Spectre Folio - 13-ak0013dx
Microsoft Windows 11

My Spectre Folio Convertible 13 recently began to shut down while I was using it.  I had noticed that it was very hot just above the keyboard, I think that is the speaker grill.  I have tried spraying compressed air into that grill, since I see no other vent opening.  I don't think that helped.  I updated some drivers, including the BIOS.

I rebooted, went to BIOS setup & chose Cool Mode.  I think this has helped a bit.

Sometime back I upgraded to Windows 11 & didn't see any problems.  Now I wonder if this is related.  Also, temperatures where I am recently got to the 90's, for maybe the first time since I upgraded.  So the temperature in the house stays close to 80F.

EDIT:  I loaded a program called Core Temp.  The temps look ok, except sometimes when I look at the dashboard, it seems that Core #1 is too hot for a moment & then it goes back to a reasonable temperature.  There is an exclamation point next to that value, even when it is a reasonable amount.  I think that means that it has overheated.  I wonder if I should try to figure out how to return to Windows 10.  Or maybe there's a way to cool this pc, even though it seems to have no fan and no vents.

Here is the outcome from the Support url you suggested.

Clean Vents & inspect fans:  As far as I can tell, there are no fans on this pc.  This is a Spectre Folio Convertible 13 ak0xx.It's covered with leather.  When I look at the bottom, I see no vents, just leather.  There are some holes above the function keys, but I think those are just for the speakers.  If I'm wrong, please let me know.

Increase the efficiency to reduce heat:  I did go to Startup and stopped a program or 2.  I generally just use Firefox and sometime Outlook.

Make sure there is adequate ventilation:  I have setup a small fan to blow on the computer, made sure there is 6 inches of space around it.  I don't play games.

Place the laptop in a cooler room:  I don't have a cooler room.  As I said, it's about 80 degrees in the house & I always have ceiling fans running.  The laptop showed no overheating problems last summer.  Also, I think I mentioned that I upgraded to Window 11 over this last winter.

Use HP Software to manage internal temperature:  I searched Windows for HP Coolsense and HP Command Center.  Those programs were not found.

Change the system performance settings:  I did not find HP Cool Control.   I did restart, went to the BIOS and changed the System Power Scheme from Balanced to Cool.  That may have helped some.

When I go to HP Support Assistant, it asks me for a version of Windows.  It will not allow me to choose Windows 11.  When I choose Version Independent, I am only offered driver for the Pen.  No BIOS update.

Test for Hardware Failures:  I ran the fast and the extensive tests, they all passed.

The problem is that the pc seems to get hot.  It happened when I was only running Firefox.  It has not shut down while I was using it since i changed the System Power Scheme to Cool Mode in the BIOS.  I am running a program called Core Temp to check the CPU temps.  Core 1 seems to get to about 81 C after running for a while, but it's usually more like 43 degrees C. Core 2 is usually about 43 C, but it gets above 90 C and Core Temp indicates that it got too hot.  This is with a fan blowing on the pc.

I'd like to know if there is a good way to cool the pc down.  Since I see no vents, I'm not sure I can do anything.

Also, I wonder if I should try to revert to Windows 10, instead of running Windows 11.  If you this that could help, I would appreciate your advice on how to do that.  I'm thinking that last summer the pc was in the same temperatures without problem.  I was running Window 10 at that time.  Or, again, maybe there is a way for me to clean out some vents that I don't know about.

Thanks,

Kelly

I have the same laptop and this overheating issue started for me today after normal windows updates. Hadn't used the machine for about a week prior to this. Never had the symptoms before.

Still on Windows 10, so reverting OS's seems unlikely to fix it.

I am rolling back updates to see if that is the cause.

Thanks for your response.

I see that after performing a couple of troubleshooting steps, your system heating issue has become better. I would suggest you observe the system performance and let me know.

You can also boot your system into the safe mode and check if the issue persists in the safe mode. Here is a link: CLICK HERE

Let me know the outcome of it.

Conscript-  Thanks for the info.  I'll be interested to find out how things work out for you.

I've been googling & it looks to me like maybe getting up to 95 - 97 C may not be so bad, since the maximum for the CPU is probably 100 C.  I think maybe the CPU is being throttled  so that it does get to 100 C.  I think that, prior to me changing the System Power Scheme from Balanced to Cool Mode, the system shut down because it was at or near 100 C.

I still don't like the high temperatures and I hope to find a way to keep them lower.  I'm not at all sure that the temperatures I'm seeing are OK.  I'm still worried about Window 11 and the fact that I may not get BIOS updates.  If you get good results, maybe I'll try to do something similar with recent Win11 updates.

And if anyone has this sort of problem, I'd be interested to see what they do.

Thanks for your response.

Laptops have been designed to work within a safe temperature range, typically between 50 to 95 degrees F.

I hope you have updated all the drivers on your system already. Please update the Windows and check if the issue persists.

Also, it would be great if you could boot your system into the safe mode and observe the performance in the safe mode. Keep me posted.
