My notebook has always run warm causing the fan to run almost continuously. I have a friend/business partner with the same machine who says his fan only kicks on high when running heavy tasks (like photoshop). All other times the fan is off or very low (barely audible). Whereas mine I could have 1 tab open and the fan kicks on in high gear like it's trying to takeoff.

Lately, the fan will start to cycle on and off and at variable speeds to keep the computer cool (as its designed to do), but then out of the blue it will no longer kick on causing the computer to overheat and go into thermal lockdown.

Summary Concerns:

  • That the computer seems to be running too hot under no to minimal load. I just downloaded the Core Temp software and with no tasks running other than this tab, the 4 cores have hit 96c, 99c, 100c, and 100c
  • That the fan will be operating normally then randomly fail to kick on causing the computer to overheat.

Purchased in August 2021. Kept elevated on my desk. Drivers and bios are updated. Appears dust free but I have not opened it.

Thank you for the response.

Unfortunately, this did not solve the problem. It does not appear my notebook has the "HP Cool Sense" feature. I do have "Smart Sense" under my system controls. I was previously in this mode when the issue began, so I switched to "balanced"

Coincidently, I had a shut down shortly after following the steps in this note. I made sure I was in "smart sense" mode. In this mode, the fan operates in what sounds like a breathing pattern, which is less intense than the full throttle it would kick into before.

However, it still shut down shortly after. Again, with nothing more than 1-2 tabs open.

Hi Treeko,

I've gone though the BIOS update steps a few times before coming here.

I ran through the steps below and confirmed via the pop up I received: "The best drivers for  your device are already installed".
