I have an hp laptop. that started overheating very very quickly then shutting off. I took it to Geek Squad for repair...they told me I needed a new batterie. I bought a new battery & had them install it. Ended up not being the issue. They said they shipped the hp computer out for further repair. It came back as unable to repair? During this fiasco I purchased another hp (brand new) AND the same issue...it was heating up and shutting off, unable to use it? For the new computer I had to purchase a cooling pad and for now (two weeks) seems to be working, for how long I do not know.. We are talking about two upper end hp computers overheating and a lot of time trying to get repaired...not to mention the expense....Why is this happening according? I have been told by a couple computer people that it is a result of AI and that AI is continually running in the background....How do you disconnect AI? I do not need AI for what I use any of my devices for. If I want to "Google" I can use my phone and get AI generated answers.........AI is actually a hinderance for me...Thoughts & solutions appreciated...

Hi @Soozycue,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query. I will be glad to help you.

I truly hear your frustration. Two high-end HP laptops are overheating and shutting down, one sent for repair and returned as “unable to fix,” and now a brand-new one needing a cooling pad just to stay functional… that’s a lot to go through. You’ve invested time, money, and trust, and it’s understandable to feel let down.

What You Can Do

Disable AI Features in Windows

You can reduce background AI activity by turning off these features:

  1. Turn Off Windows Copilot
    • Go to Settings > Personalization > Taskbar
    • Toggle Copilot to Off

  2. Disable Background Apps
    • Go to Settings > Apps > Installed Apps
    • Click on each app and disable Background permissions

  3. Turn Off AI in Microsoft Edge
    • Open Edge > Settings > Privacy, Search, and Services
    • Disable “Enhance images”, “AI writing assistance”, and “Copilot”

  4. Disable HP Smart Features
    • Open HP Support Assistant
    • Go to Settings > Health Analysis
    • Turn off Automatic updates and diagnostics

  5. Check Task Manager
    • Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc
    • Look for high CPU/GPU usage apps and disable them from startup

I hope this helps.

Take care and have an amazing day!
