HP Spectre x360 - 13-ae004na

After suddenly crashing, my hp spectre x360 laptop not booting up after the hp logo. Can open up F10 bios, F2 takes a long time but does open evenutally, F9 open too. The F11 does not lead to anything apart from blank screen. Windows + B does not do anything. After using Hp diagnostics UEFI on a usb recovery drive, passes most tests fine. But it comes up that Storage quick test not available. Laptop passed the hard drive quick and extensive test, but for storage test it says no storage installed. Confusing. Should I just give up on current ssd, go ahead and order a new ssd? Which ssd will be compatible and can I install using windows media creation tool windows 10 again on the new ssd without any issue, cannot find windows product key, will I have to pay for that too? Pretty stressful stuff.

Hi, @TPuserfdbk

I would first try to install Windows 10 from 0, then check if it works, if it doesn't work you may need to change the disk. For the license there are no problems this is stored digitally in the BIOS and takes it from there automatically.

Hi Resistencia,

Thank you for the suggestion. I was thinking about that but haven't dared to do it because I want to try to not damage all the data already on the ssd and leave some room for a potential recovery. I was hoping to exhaust all other options first before going there because I am assuming installing Windows 10 from 0 will get rid of all the data, files, software installed, etc.

If this is true, everything is deleted, you can try to enter safe mode.

I have wanted to enter via safe mode too but just haven't managed to. F11 which would lead me to system recovery options just never opens. Tried going via windows media creation tool installed windows 10 on usb drive and then 'repair the pc' followed by attempting to enter safe mode-networking via command prompt but realised that it will probably not work since that goes via usb windows drive and it didn't work.

try entering the options menu by pressing the ESC key several times.

(Without the USB boot drive) Going via esc I can enter the start menu. Then F1, F2, F7, F9, F10 I can enter, but F11 (system receovery), which is where safe mode or other options should be it just doesn't open and remains blank screen even when left overnight. When I press F2 (system diagnostics), the memory test, hard drive quick and extensive check passed without issue. When pressing storage tests, it says 'no storage installed' in both quick and extensive tests. Hence, since F11 I can't access, I am not able to enter safe mode/recovery, etc. So it is so annoying since hard drive checks pass but storage tests fail. Can enter most F keys but not the F11 system recovery. Earlier it used to remain stuck at hp logo only. Now having tried booting using usb drive with windows 10 a couple of times and then removing the usb to go back to the original start up method (via original boot + hard drive), it does go a step more than just getting stuck at hp logo...it says Preparing automatic repair followed by blus 'Recovery screen' with few messages "Your PC/device needs to be repaired. A required device isn't connected or can't be accessed. Error code: 0xc0000185 . You'll need to use recovery tool. If you don't have any installation media (like a disc or usb device), contact PC administrator or PC/Device manufacturer." At the bottom it says press F1 to enter Recovery environment, Press F8 for start up settings, Press Esc for UEFI firmware settings. Pressing each of them again just leads back to the blue screen with same messages evenutally not leading to boot up further.

When I performed HP diagnostics UEFI via USB drive, it passed most tests apart from Storage test check for which it said 'Storage quick check not availbale'. You have an old version of UEFI diagnostics unfortunately if you have access to windows you can't install the latest version so you can't test the SSD disk,

I recommend you to reinstall windows as instructed.

Felt the uefi diagnostics were old too. But that is what I got from HP's website too when used as USB boot drive. I will try to see different options before installing windows 10 fully since I want to limit damage to all data and its irretrievability with a new install. Thank you for your inputs, really appreciate it. Let's see if someone else has gone through same issue and has found a neat solution. 🙂
