Hi @AnnRa,
Welcome to HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
If your HP Notebook - 17 is freezing during Windows updates, this issue could be due to corrupted update files, hardware issues, or insufficient system resources. Here’s how you can troubleshoot and resolve it.
Force a Restart
- Press and hold the Power button until the laptop powers off.
- Wait for 10 seconds and turn it back on.
- Observe if the update resumes or prompts recovery options.
Boot into Safe Mode
- Power off the laptop, then power it back on and repeatedly press the F8 or Esc key (varies by model) until the Startup Menu appears.
- Navigate to Advanced Startup Options > Safe Mode.
- If it boots into Safe Mode:
- Open Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update > View Update History.
- Uninstall the most recent update if applicable, as it may be causing the issue.
- Restart and try updating again.
Use the Windows Recovery Environment (WinRE)
- Force a restart 2-3 times until the laptop enters the Recovery Environment.
- Select Troubleshoot > Advanced Options:
- Startup Repair: Let Windows attempt to fix the problem.
- Uninstall Updates: Roll back the latest update.
Check Disk Health
- In WinRE, open the Command Prompt:
- Type: chkdsk C: /f /r and press Enter.
- Let the scan complete; it may take time.
Perform a System Restore
If you had System Restore enabled:
- In WinRE, go to Troubleshoot > Advanced Options > System Restore.
- Select a restore point prior to the update.

Reset Windows Updates
- Boot into Safe Mode with Networking.
- Open Command Prompt as Administrator and run these commands:
net stop wuauserv
net stop cryptsvc
net stop bits
net stop msiserver
ren C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution SoftwareDistribution.old
ren C:\Windows\System32\catroot2 catroot2.old
net start wuauserv
net start cryptsvc
net start bits
net start msiserver
- Restart the system and try updating again.
Reset Your PC (Last Resort)
If none of the above works, consider resetting Windows:
- Boot into WinRE.
- Go to Troubleshoot > Reset this PC.
- Choose Keep my files or Remove everything based on your preference.
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.
