Hi @AnnRa,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

If your HP Notebook - 17 is freezing during Windows updates, this issue could be due to corrupted update files, hardware issues, or insufficient system resources. Here’s how you can troubleshoot and resolve it.

Force a Restart

  1. Press and hold the Power button until the laptop powers off.
  2. Wait for 10 seconds and turn it back on.
  3. Observe if the update resumes or prompts recovery options.

Boot into Safe Mode

  1. Power off the laptop, then power it back on and repeatedly press the F8 or Esc key (varies by model) until the Startup Menu appears.
  2. Navigate to Advanced Startup Options > Safe Mode.
  3. If it boots into Safe Mode:
    • Open Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update > View Update History.
    • Uninstall the most recent update if applicable, as it may be causing the issue.
    • Restart and try updating again.

Use the Windows Recovery Environment (WinRE)

  1. Force a restart 2-3 times until the laptop enters the Recovery Environment.
  2. Select Troubleshoot > Advanced Options:
    • Startup Repair: Let Windows attempt to fix the problem.
    • Uninstall Updates: Roll back the latest update.

Check Disk Health

  1. In WinRE, open the Command Prompt:
    • Type: chkdsk C: /f /r and press Enter.
    • Let the scan complete; it may take time.

Perform a System Restore

If you had System Restore enabled:

  1. In WinRE, go to Troubleshoot > Advanced Options > System Restore.
  2. Select a restore point prior to the update.

Reset Windows Updates

  1. Boot into Safe Mode with Networking.
  2. Open Command Prompt as Administrator and run these commands:

net stop wuauserv
net stop cryptsvc
net stop bits
net stop msiserver
ren C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution SoftwareDistribution.old
ren C:\Windows\System32\catroot2 catroot2.old
net start wuauserv
net start cryptsvc
net start bits
net start msiserver

  1. Restart the system and try updating again.

Reset Your PC (Last Resort)

If none of the above works, consider resetting Windows:

  1. Boot into WinRE.
  2. Go to Troubleshoot > Reset this PC.
  3. Choose Keep my files or Remove everything based on your preference.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
