HP laptop
Microsoft Windows 10 (32-bit)

I cannot get past the login screen. I know the password is correct but it says it isn't. I can use shift + restart to get to further options but system restore, previous version, system recovery, command prompt and safe mode options all ask for a password which then says incorrect. Keyboard is correct and password is correct when viewed using the picture of an eye. Laptop is not connected to the Internet and this can't be changed from the login page. There is only one account on the laptop. There is no option to switch accounts or to login as administrator. I have found many threads with this same or similar problem but so far none of the solutions I've tried have worked for me. The only thing I have yet to try is factory reset, because I don't want to lose my data , and another thread that tried it said it still didn't work for them. Please help.

@Leonie11,

Thank you for posting your query on HP Community,

What type of account have you created? Is it a Microsoft account or Local account. If it's a Microsoft account

How are you connected to the internet? Is it Wireless or Wired. If it's wireless can you try to connect using Wired (Ethernet connection)

Recommend you restart your computer.

On the login screen, to the bottom right-side of the screen, you will have a network icon.

Check if you are connected to the internet.

If you are connected to your network, disconnect the connection and then try to login.

If you are still unable to login, shutdown the computer.

Wait for a minute.

Turn the computer On and keep tapping F11 repeatedly to enter Recovery Manager and perform a system restore to a date when you were able to login fine.

Please refer to this HP Article for assistance in performing a system restore.

If the issue persists, let's try this first: Use the HP Guided Solution: Can't sign into Windows

Microsoft account:

Reset your Microsoft account password online. You can reset your password on any device connected to the Internet. See the Microsoft password reset page to reset your password: Click here

Local account:

Use the following link to reset the password for your local account: Windows 10: HP PCs - Change or Reset the Computer Password (Windows 10)

If there are no other accounts with Administrator rights, you do not have a password reset disk, try these other options:

  • You can perform an HP System Recovery to completely erase all files, including password information, and go back to the way the system was when it was first purchased. For more information, see HP Guided Solution - Performing an HP System Recovery.

  • If you haven't created a set of recovery media, then I would suggest you to obtain recovery media - Here's what you need to know about obtaining a recovery media for yourself: Click here

I recommend you contact our HP support team so that they can help you in ordering/downloading a set of recovery media for your PC.

You can contact HP support team on this link.

Hope this answers your question.

Good luck and keep me posted about the developments. If this helps, please mark this as “Accepted Solution” as it will help several others with the same issue and give the post a Kudos for my efforts to help. Thank you and have a great week ahead. 🙂
