If you've recently changed your Microsoft account password and are now unable to log into Windows, it's likely due to the change not being fully synchronized with your computer. Here's how to resolve this: [1]

1. Verify the New Password: [2, 3, 4]
  • Double-check the password: Make sure you're entering the new password correctly. It's easy to make a typo.
  • Try the old password (temporarily): If you can still log in with the old password, it confirms the issue is with the synchronization, not a fundamental login problem.
2. Sync the Password: [5, 5, 6, 6, 7]
  • Log in with a network connection: Try logging in with an internet connection (if available) as this can help Windows sync with your Microsoft account.
  • Try logging in using security information: If your login screen has an option to "Sign in with other means," try logging in with your security information, like an authentication email, according to Microsoft.
3. Access Safe Mode: [8, 8, 9, 9, 10, 11, 12]
  • Force a shutdown: Restart your computer. As soon as the Windows logo appears, press and hold the power button to force a shutdown. Repeat this process a couple of times.
  • Enter Troubleshooting: When Windows detects a startup issue, it will offer a troubleshooting menu.
  • Start in Safe Mode: Choose "Troubleshoot," then "Advanced options," then "Startup Settings," and finally "Restart".
  • Select Safe Mode: After the restart, press 4 or F4 to start in Safe Mode.
4. Switch to a Local Account (if needed):
  • Access settings: Once in Safe Mode, go to Settings > Accounts > Your info. [8, 9]
  • Switch account: Select "Sign in with a local account instead" and follow the prompts. [8, 9]
  • Re-add Microsoft Account: After creating the local account, you can then add your Microsoft account back. This can sometimes reset any account-related issues. [7]
5. Check for updates: [9]
  • Go to Windows Update: Navigate to Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update.
  • Check for updates: Click "Check for updates" to ensure your system is up to date.
6. Consider other solutions:
  • Set up a PIN: After logging in, you can set up a PIN as an alternative login method. [9, 9]
  • Contact Microsoft Support: If the problem persists, it's best to contact Microsoft Support. They can provide specific guidance based on your situation. [6, 6, 9, 9, 13]
