Microsoft Windows 11

Ever since windows automatic updates has installed device drivers my touchpad, mouse has stopped working. External keyboard & mouse works fine with no issues. Infact the touchpad & keyboard works fine even at bios level. But once windows loads they dont work.

I have tried reinstalling Windows 11 , everything works fine until i connect to internet and WindowsUpdate installs drivers and immediately both keyboard and touchpad ( mouse) stops working.

I have tried everything to my avail but nothing has worked and hence posting this message for help from the community/HP support .

Hi @ManeeshS

Welcome to the HP Support Community! We're here to help you get back up and running.

Thank you for sharing the details—I'm really sorry you're facing this. It’s incredibly frustrating when a fresh Windows installation works perfectly until automatic updates interfere and disable core input like the built-in keyboard and touchpad. The fact that both work in BIOS and during setup confirms this is a driver-level conflict introduced by Windows Update, not a hardware fault.

Here’s a focused recovery plan to restore functionality and prevent future disruptions:

Boot into Safe Mode:

  • Restart your computer and press Shift + Restart.
  • From the options, select "Troubleshoot" > "Advanced options" > "Startup Settings" and then click "Restart".
  • Once your PC restarts, select option 4 to boot into "Safe Mode".
  • In this mode, check if your touchpad and keyboard work. If they do, the issue is most likely related to a driver conflict.

Uninstall Problematic Drivers:

  • Boot into Safe Mode as mentioned above and go to Device Manager.
  • Expand the "Keyboards" and "Mice and other pointing devices" sections.
  • Right-click on the touchpad and keyboard devices and select "Uninstall device". Do not delete the driver software if prompted.
  • Restart your computer and let Windows detect and reinstall the drivers.

Prevent Windows from Automatically Updating Drivers:

  • Press Windows + R, type gpedit.msc and hit Enter.
  • Navigate to "Computer Configuration" > "Administrative Templates" > "Windows Components" > "Windows Update".
  • Look for the policy "Do not include drivers with Windows Update". Double-click it, set it to "Enabled", and apply the changes.

Update or Rollback Drivers:

  • If Windows has installed a new version of the driver, you might need to roll it back. Go to Device Manager, right-click your device, select "Properties", navigate to the "Driver" tab, and click "Rollback Driver".
  • Alternatively, visit the HP Support website to download the latest drivers specifically released for your device model and operating system version.

BIOS Update:

  • Check if there’s an available BIOS update for your device on the HP website. Updating BIOS may solve compatibility issues or bugs with device drivers.

Reinstall or Update Windows:

  • As a last resort, consider performing a clean install of Windows without connecting to the internet until you have installed all the necessary drivers manually from the HP support site.

By following these steps, you should be able to resolve the issues with your touchpad and keyboard after the Windows update.
