Hi:

The error code reported, Hard Disk 1 Quick Test Failure, means that the hard drive needs to be replaced, and the operating system reinstalled.

Below is the link to the service manual.  The hard drive R & R procedure can be found in chapter 5.

You may want to consider purchasing a better performing, normally more reliable solid state drive (SSD).

After you replace the hard drive you should be able to reinstall W10 using the cloud recovery client software.

Here is an info link on how to use that software...

My lifestyle since 2009 is extremely laptop dependent. I therefore always replace it after 2 years. Up till now I always had HDD laptops. This was my first HP and its HDD failed after 17 months (although I suspect the problem going back at least 3 months as I had "switching off on full battery" issues ). So I would want to know what can possibly be the reason of this happening ?

It's impossible for me to say exactly what caused the failure.

The most likely cause is heat buildup.

The sequence of events:

1) switch off with the battery charged anywhere between 30 and 90%, both on and off mains

2) significant slow down, opening one photo file anywhere between 5 and 30 seconds, randomly

3) windows 10 update 1903

4) System backup on external HD failed

5) Component test for HD on HP support page failed, both short and long

6) Microsoft provided free phone assistance and launched disc repair from distant control

7) System backup on external HD succeeded

8).not any single further incident of capricious switch offs

9) Component test on HP support site failed

10) the laptop functions "normally"with still some random opening times for pics and Outlook

Does that give any ideas ?
