I was gifted said laptop minus the ac/dc power adapter sometime ago. I finally ordered the appropriate power adapter and turned it on for the first time a few days ago only to find out that the user login had not been disabled. I contacted the original owner but unfortunately he could not remember the password. The unit came factory with Windows Vista but had since been upgraded to its current running OS, Windows 10. I’ve read up on some possible soulution to this problem but wanted to find out which one would be the best route to go. I don’t have any readable access to another computer to aid in the process and was hoping that I could avoid doing a full HP recovery cause I’d like to keep some of the aftermarket software that’s been installed. Is there anyway of getting past the login password with out performing one of the two methods mentioned above? The original owner would be able to provide proof of ownership for the unit and therefore transfer of said ownership to me to aid in any remedy if needed.

First off, the HP Recovery will no longer work because the Win10 Upgrade is known to corrupt the recovery information, making a rollback not possible after that.
Second, we are not permitted to provide information to enable bypassing the login, even though you claim the original owner will confirm they gave the PC to you.
Third, your best approach, at this point (especially since there is no direct Upgrade Path from Vista to Win10) would be to completely reinstall Win10 from scratch on the PC -- but to do that, you would need access to a PC to use this Microsoft tool to download and create Win10 install media: https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-download/windows10
Since the PC is already running Win10, when it gets reinstalled and the PC goes online, it will automatically check with Microsoft and reactivate the OS.

First off **bleep** wad, I did just a wee bit more research on my own being that your reply to my inquiry wasn’t only some what condisending and passive aggressive but not very helpful either, to say the least.
Didn’t take too much effort to hone down my research parameters, locate a far better and user friendly solution than the ones you, I’m assuming just regurgitated verbatim off of some other random IT forum. After watching a less than 3min long video it took me about 15 seconds before I had the process started and in a little less than an hour it was complete. It worked fabulously and 100% step for step exactly how they showed on the video. Password has been reset, PC was reset too which is I wanted anyways and the video explained how to do it without deleting the OS. All updates downloaded smoothly and the computer is working great. I should have just figured it out on my own from the get go as would be my usual m.o. Being that my knowledge in computers is very limited at best, I thought made I should elicit the help from a real pro ergo my post on here. I do regret that decision, learned my lesson and will be including the weary souls looking for assistance but are unluckily enough to get a reply from you in my daily prayers.
