Pavilion Sleekbook 14-b009TU
Microsoft Windows 8.1 (64-bit)

Hi,

I have come across an issue with my notebook, and hope I would be able to get some insight into what is wrong here.

I was given a Pavilion Sleekbook 14-b009TU recently, and after a RAM upgrade, installed Windows 8.1.  Here are the issues I've encountered so far:

(1) The laptop is not booting up from the HDD unless I go through the Esc -> Boot Menu on F9 and manually selecting it every time.  Only the values "Boot from EFI File" and "Notebook Hard Drive" is present, with the former on top in the Boot Menu through F9.

(2) When the system goes to Sleep due to inactivity, it would not wake up, and I need to restart the laptop through the power switch.

(3) Laptop does not seem to identify the WLAN on Device Manager, and therefore cannot enable WiFi.

Here are the fixes I've attempted (in no particular order), with no results:

(1) Attempted to write a new boot sector (through fixboot command)

(2) Hard reset the laptop with the battery/power cord removed and pressing the power button for more than 15 sec.

(3) Setting the BIOS values to factory default

(4) Checking the health of the Windows system files (through System File Checker)

(5) Attempted to repair the Master Boot Record (MBR) (through fixmbr command)

I have set the BIOS to factory default, which means the Legacy Support = Enabled, and Secure Boot = Disabled.  On the BIOS, "OS Boot Manager" and "Notebook Hard Drive" is at the top of UEFI and Legacy Boot order sections respectively.

I have created the USB Bootable media for the Windows installation through Rufus.

Key info:

Model = Pavilion Sleekbook 14-b009TU

Product Number = C5J12PA#UUF

OS = Windows 8.1 Pro (64-bit) Version 6.3.9600 Build 9600

Partition style = Master Boot Record (through Disk Manager)

BIOS Mode = Legacy (through msinfo32)

System Board = 18FA 82.12

BIOS Version Date = Insyde F.03 / 9/7/2012 (through msinfo32)

Legacy Support = Enabled in BIOS

Secure Boot = Disabled in BIOS

Under DISKPART, both the System and the Boot partition is NTFS

Thanks in advance, and hope some light could be shed on this for a fix.

@The_Fossette

Thanks for reaching out to me, and for the pointers.

I've updated the BIOS as per your instructions and it resolved 2 of the issues; the laptop now boots from the HDD and wakes up from sleep as it should be.

However, the WLAN/Bluetooth issue still remains; the wireless adapter is not recognized, and I've installed all the drivers from the HP website Support section.  The Ethernet connection is recognized and works though.

Would you have any pointers on how to resolve this?  Based on what I saw on the Device Manager, the WLAN card is "Ralink RT3290 802.11bgn".

Cheers

Disable the Power Off option for the adapter:

1. Open Device Manager. (Win Key+R > type devmgmt.msc > OK)

2. Expand the Network adapters.

3. Right click on the Ethernet/Wireless Adapter and click Properties.

4. Click the Power Management tab.

5. Remove the check mark beside Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power.

6. Click OK.

7. Test.

Reset the TCP/IP settings on your PC:

1. Go to your start screen/menu and type CMD.

2. Right click on the command prompt icon and chose Run as administrator.

3. In the window that opens type "netsh int ip reset resetlog.txt" without quotes, and press enter.

4. Restart your PC and test.

It may also help to reset the winsock catalogue:

1. Go to your start screen/menu and type CMD.

2. Right click on the command prompt icon and chose Run as administrator.

3. In the window that opens type "netsh winsock reset" without quotes, and press enter.

4. Restart your PC and test.

Reinstall the network adapter drivers:

1. Download the drivers from here but do not run them yet.

2. Go to your start screen/menu and type Device Manager.

3. Expand Network adapters.

4. Right click on the wireless adapter and choose Uninstall.

5. Run the downloaded drivers from step 1.

6. Restart your PC and test.

Let me know how it goes and you have a great day!

Hi @The_Fossette,

Executed all the steps mentioned, and unfortunately it did not resolve the situation.

After the re-installation of the network adapter drivers in Step 4, the WLAN disappeared from the Device Manager and would not come back.  Wired connection still works though.

What I now see under the Network Adapters section is as follows:

RealTek PCIe FE Family Controller

Microsoft Kernal Debug Network Adapter (Hidden)

Microsoft ISATAP Adapter #2 (Hidden)

Any thoughts?

Cheers

Follow the steps in the below article and run a test on the wireless card.
