Hi @mavstudio,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query. I will be glad to help you.

When your HP PC says “Install an OS on hard disk”, it means the system cannot find a valid operating system to boot. This usually happens because:

Common Causes

  • Corrupted boot files (after failed system restore or update).
  • Hard drive not detected or partition table damaged.
  • BIOS settings changed (boot order or Secure Boot).
  • Windows installation was removed or corrupted.

Recommended Fixes

Step 1: Check BIOS

  1. Restart the PC and press Esc or F10 repeatedly to enter BIOS.
  2. Confirm:
    • The hard drive is listed.
    • Boot order includes your internal drive.
    • Secure Boot is enabled (for Windows 11).

Step 2: Run HP Hardware Diagnostics

  • Press Esc > F2 at startup.
  • Run Storage Test to ensure the hard disk is healthy.

Step 3: Repair Boot Files

Step 4: If Startup Repair Fails

  • In Advanced Options, open Command Prompt and run:
             bootrec /fixmbr
             bootrec /fixboot
             bootrec /scanos
             bootrec /rebuildbcd

(This rebuilds the boot configuration.)

Step 5: Reinstall Windows (Last Resort)

  • If the OS partition is corrupted beyond repair:
    • Back up data using HP Cloud Recovery or an external drive.
    • Reinstall Windows from the USB.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have an amazing day!
