@Jay705, Welcome to HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
The message "Please install an operating system on your hard disk" typically appears when your computer cannot detect a valid operating system on the hard drive. This can happen if:
- The hard drive is new or has been wiped.
- The operating system has become corrupted.
- The boot order is misconfigured in BIOS/UEFI.
Here’s how you can resolve this:
Step 1: Check BIOS Settings
- Turn off your PC.
- Turn it back on and immediately press the Esc key repeatedly (or F10 on some models) to enter the Startup Menu.
- Select BIOS Setup.
- Ensure the hard drive is detected under Storage or Boot Options.
- Make sure the boot order prioritizes the hard drive or USB (if installing OS).
Step 2: Install Windows Using HP Cloud Recovery or Installation Media
If your hard drive is detected but no OS is installed, you’ll need to install one. You can do this in two ways:
Option 1: Use HP Cloud Recovery Tool (Recommended for HP PCs)
This tool helps you download and reinstall the original Windows OS and drivers.
HP Consumer PCs - Using the HP Cloud Recovery Tool in Windows 11 and 10 | HP® Support
Steps:
- Use another working PC to download the tool.
- Insert a USB drive (at least 32 GB).
- Follow the tool’s instructions to create recovery media.
- Insert the USB into your affected PC and boot from it.
- Follow on-screen instructions to reinstall Windows.
Option 2: Use Microsoft Media Creation Tool
If HP Recovery is not available, you can install a fresh copy of Windows:
Steps:
- Use another PC to download the tool.
- Create a bootable USB drive.
- Insert it into your HP PC and boot from USB.
- Follow the prompts to install Windows.
Additional Tips:
- If your PC came with Windows pre-installed, it should automatically activate once connected to the internet.
- If the hard drive is not detected in BIOS, it may need to be reseated or replaced.
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.
