Hey all,

I've noticed that the power light on the power button stays on after shutting down the laptop.  How can I fix this?

Hi @RPG07,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

The issue of the power light staying on after shutting down your HP laptop could be due to several reasons, including.

  1. Fast Startup: Windows Fast Startup sometimes prevents the system from fully shutting down, leaving power to certain components.
  2. BIOS Settings: Misconfigured BIOS power settings may cause this behavior.
  3. Peripheral Devices: Connected USB devices or peripherals can keep the laptop in a semi-powered state.
  4. Driver or Hardware Issue: Outdated drivers or hardware issues, such as with the power button itself.

Disable Fast Startup

Fast Startup can cause the power light to stay on. To disable it:

  1. Go to Control Panel > Power Options > Choose what the power buttons do.
  2. Click on Change settings that are currently unavailable.
  3. Uncheck the box for Turn on fast startup (recommended).
  4. Save the changes and restart your laptop.

Check BIOS Settings

  • Enter the BIOS/UEFI by pressing the appropriate key during startup (usually Esc, F2, or F10).
  • Look for power management settings. Ensure options like Wake on LAN or USB Power in Sleep Mode are disabled.
  • Save and exit the BIOS.

Disconnect Peripherals

  • Disconnect all USB devices and peripherals (e.g., mouse, external drives) before shutting down.
  • Shut down the laptop and check if the power light turns off.

Update Drivers and BIOS

  • Ensure your system drivers, especially the chipset and power management drivers, are up to date.
  • Visit HP's Support page to download the latest BIOS update for your laptop model.

Perform a Hard Reset

  • Turn off the laptop and disconnect it from the power source.
  • Remove the battery (if removable) and hold the power button for 15-30 seconds to discharge any residual power.
  • Reconnect the battery/power and turn the laptop on.

Run a System Diagnostics Test

  • Restart your laptop and press Esc during startup to access the system diagnostics.
  • Run a hardware test to check for any power-related issues.

Check Windows Updates

  • Ensure your laptop is running the latest version of Windows. Updates may fix bugs related to power management.

Inspect for Physical Issues

  • If none of the above works, the power button itself may be faulty, or there could be a hardware issue with the motherboard or power circuitry.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
