Hi @DottieKBR ,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

If your HP Envy computer is powering on but only displaying a black screen, there are several potential causes for this issue. Here are steps you can take to troubleshoot and resolve the problem:

Check the Display Connection:

  • Ensure that the monitor or display is properly connected to your HP Envy computer.
  • If you are using an external monitor, make sure it is powered on and connected securely to the computer.
  • If you're using a laptop, try connecting to an external monitor to see if the issue persists.

Restart the Computer:

  • Sometimes, a simple restart can resolve temporary glitches. Power off the computer, wait a few seconds, and then turn it back on.

Boot into Safe Mode:

  • Restart your computer and try booting into Safe Mode. In Safe Mode, Windows loads with a minimal set of drivers and services, which can help identify if the issue is related to third-party software or drivers.

Check for External Devices:

  • Disconnect all external devices (USB drives, external hard drives, printers, etc.) and restart the computer. Sometimes, a malfunctioning external device can cause boot issues.

Perform a Hard Reset:

  • Turn off the computer and disconnect any external power sources.
  • Remove the battery (if applicable) and hold down the power button for about 15 seconds.
  • Reconnect the battery and power sources, then turn the computer back on.

BIOS/UEFI Settings:

  • Access the BIOS/UEFI settings during the boot process (usually by pressing a key like Esc, F2, F10, or Del) and check if the settings are correct. Resetting BIOS/UEFI settings to default may also be an option.

Update Graphics Drivers:

  • If you can access Safe Mode, update your graphics drivers. You can download the latest drivers from the official HP website or use Windows Update.

Perform a System Restore:

  • If the issue started recently, you can try using System Restore to revert your system to a previous state when it was working correctly.

Windows Recovery Environment:

  • If you have a Windows installation media (USB or DVD), you can boot from it and access the Windows Recovery Environment. From there, you can try options like Startup Repair or System Restore.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.-
