Hi, I have a HP 15 Notebook 3QT53EA ra011ni, which shuts down less than a minute on the black screen.

The black screen says Preparing automatic update and shuts down pc.

The issue is ongoing for nearly 4 years. I appreciate all the help I can get in getting the notebook working.

Kind Regards

Hi @MoAlthaf,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query. I will be glad to help you.

I hear that your HP 15 Notebook 3QT53EA ra011ni Preparing Automatic Update Failure.

Recommended HP troubleshooting steps:

1) Check power first:

If the notebook shuts down quickly, connect it directly to a working AC outlet using the AC adapter and make sure the connections are secure. HP notes that if the notebook cannot stay on with battery power, external AC power should be used, and the battery may need recharging.

Also, verify the wall outlet works by testing another device.

If the power/standby light is blinking, the notebook may be in standby mode.

2) Try a normal restart or forced shutdown/restart:

If the notebook becomes unresponsive:

  • Try the standard Windows shutdown/restart first.

  • If that does not work, press and hold the power/standby button for at least 5 seconds to shut it down, then power it back on.

3) Use Windows System Restore:

HP recommends System Restore as a low-impact option when problems begin after updates or software changes:

  • Go to Start > Help and Support > System Restore

  • Choose Restore my computer to an earlier time.

  • Follow the on-screen steps.s

HP says this restores software to an earlier working state and does not affect personal data files.

4) Repair the operating system:

If Windows is damaged, HP provides an Operating System disc repair method:

  • Connect the notebook to AC power.

  • Insert the Operating System disc.

  • Restart and boot from the disk.

  • At Setup, continue until the repair option appears, then press R to repair the selected Windows installation

5) Reinstall the operating system:

If repair does not work, HP states you can reinstall the OS, but this is a data-loss risk:

  • Back up your data first

  • Use the Operating System disc

  • Follow the reinstall process.

HP cautions that reinstalling the OS removes personal data and installed software.

6) Reinstall drivers and software after OS recovery:

After reinstalling Windows, HP says you must reinstall drivers using the Driver Recovery disc, then reinstall any added software.

7) Consider HP Recovery options:

HP’s recovery guidance also recommends trying fixes in this order:

  1. System Restore

  2. System Refresh

  3. HP Recovery

HP Recovery is the most drastic option and returns the PC to factory condition, which can remove your files and installed apps.

I hope this will help.

Take care and have a good day.
