Depending on the update, it may take a while.

Let it finish!

Unfortunately it was stuck in a never ending loop so I reinstalled windows by turning off the turned back on and at same time pressing F11 several times to take me into reinsalling windows and now all is back as it should be. Searching the web this seems to be a common problem although I never experienced this on my old Toshiba laptop.

Here's what I did to resolve this on my HP Elitebook 2760p:  While stuck on the message screen, I turned it off, removed the battery, removed the hard drive and left it for about an hour. I replaced everything, restarted it in safe mode. Instead of the configuring message, I got a message that it was |"Cleaning up".  I let it run to completion, and then restarted it in normal mode, and it booted-up just fine.
