Problem with Shift Alt and CTRL keys

HP Recommended

the shift alt and ctrl keys have stopped working in conjunction with the numerals and grammar/mathematics keys. i've tried all the usual fixes, all the shortcuts, restoring the pc to an earlier point, bios defaults etc etc - none of it worked

@MC102020

Thank you for posting on the HP Support Community.

Don't worry as I'll be glad to help, however, to provide an accurate resolution, I need a few more details:

  • Did this happen after a recent window or software update?
  • Have you made any hardware/software changes?
  • Did you make any changes on the settings of your PC prior to the issue?
  • When was the last time it worked fine?
  • What is the product number of your device? Use this link to find it: http://support.hp.com/us-en/document/c03754824

Keep me posted for further assistance.

To answer your question, I haven't installed any new software on that particular device. And on principle (privacy breaches / general disempowerment) I haven't updated to Windows 10, although most existing Windows 7 updates are intact. (Most because some wouldn't reload after my failed attempt to restore to an earlier point).

Last time that device worked fine was approx three weeks ago - there was a long interlude when I couldn't use it for other reasons.

Thank you for posting back.

System Restore returns your computer to the files and settings from the restore point. Your personal files and documents are not affected.

You can also undo a System Restore if the restore does not resolve the issue or if the issue becomes worse.

Re: Echo's last message

I know that - I've already done that, as you know from my first message.

It didn't help - and you are also not helping (!)

The shift/alt/ctrl keys stopped working in conjunction with those specific keys (the ones with numerals, punctuation, maths functions etc) during a two week period in which the machine went untouched.

I understand your concerns.

In that case, I would suggets you perform the keyboard test.

1. Power off the PC and make sure that it is completely powered off.

2. Press the power button and the moment you press the power button immediately start tapping F2 key, you should see the system diagnostics screen.

3. Look for the component test, under that all the hardware will be listed, please choose Keyboard and initiate the quick test.

Note: If it fails it will generate a 24 digits alphanumeric failure id, please capture that.

Have a nice day!!
