Hi @PS2009

Welcome to the HP Support Community! We're here to help you get back up and running.

Thanks for explaining the issue so clearly—it’s genuinely alarming when your laptop shows a black screen and starts blinking codes without warning.

The Caps Lock blinking pattern you described—three short blinks followed by two simultaneous blinks (total five)—is a diagnostic signal used by HP to indicate a hardware-level fault, often related to memory (RAM) or embedded controller failure.

Let’s walk through a structured recovery approach to help stabilize your system.

Step-by-Step Recovery Guide

1. Perform a Hard Reset

This clears residual power and resets hardware connections.

  • Power off the laptop completely
  • Disconnect the AC adapter and remove the battery (if removable)
  • Press and hold the power button for 30 seconds
  • Reconnect power and try turning it on

2. Reseat the RAM Modules

Improperly seated or oxidized RAM contacts can trigger blink codes.

  • Power off and unplug the laptop
  • Open the back panel and carefully remove the RAM sticks
  • Clean the gold contacts with a dry microfiber cloth
  • Reinsert them firmly into the slots
  • If you have two modules, try booting with one at a time

3. Run HP UEFI Hardware Diagnostics

This checks for deeper faults in memory, CPU, and motherboard.

  • Power on the laptop and immediately press Esc repeatedly
  • Select F2 for diagnostics
  • Run the Extensive Test on memory and system board

4. Reset BIOS (if accessible)

Corrupted BIOS settings can cause boot failure.

  • If the screen turns on briefly, press Esc or F10 to enter BIOS
  • Choose Load Setup Defaults, then save and exit
  • If BIOS is inaccessible, try BIOS Recovery:
    • Press and hold Windows + B, then press the power button for 2–3 seconds
    • Wait for BIOS recovery screen to appear

What the Blink Code Means

According to HP’s blink code documentation:

  • 3.2 or 3.3 blinks often indicate RAM failure or graphics chip fault
  • 5.2 or 5.3 blinks may point to embedded controller issues, which can affect BIOS communication

If the issue persists after reseating RAM and running diagnostics, it may require a service-level inspection of the motherboard or embedded controller.

I’m truly sorry this has disrupted your work—it’s exhausting when a system fails without clear warning. If diagnostics confirm a hardware fault, then this needs hardware teams intervention.

Let’s get your laptop back to reliable performance.
