Hello,

This question is actually an update to a previous question I’ve had, but I thought I would put this in a separate question so that more people can see it. I will sum everything up in from my first question, then give the update to my issues.

Basically, my first question just described my computer being slow and unresponsive, including at startup, with file explorer lagging or not responding and the desktop frequently crashing - and sometimes, my computer freezing up and not responding to the point where I have to restart. At one point, the computer also shut down after it was unplugged for a few seconds.

And now this updated message: My PC is new enough to support UEFI, so I ran it through a system extensive test and a hard drive extensive test from the BIOS menu and it told me everything passed just fine. As a result, my computer's been slightly more responsive and I've had less trouble with file explorer, though I still frequently get crashes.

Now, I not only have this problem I'm still dealing with, but I also have two new problems.

The first one is that my computer shuts down as soon as it's unplugged (and I've also noticed that upon getting this issue, the light on the battery icon used to be blue whether the PC was plugged in or not, but now when it's plugged in, the light is orange). I've already tried reinstalling the Microsoft ACPI Compliant Control Method Battery, and this other idea from the forums where you disconnect the battery and cord, hold the power button down for 1 minute, then reconnect everything and turn it on again, and neither of these things worked.

The forums say for this new issue you're supposed to update the BIOS; but upon trying to update it, I found the warning message: "Updating the TPM firmware while the drive is encrypted will result in data loss." So I am currently backing up my data; and as for de-crypting my drive (which I believe it's referring to the hard drive?), I am very confused as to what to do next. I'm not sure what exactly that would do, how to "re-crypt it" once it's been de-crypted (assuming you can even do that) and I'm not sure if it's still necessary to do anyway if I'm backing everything up.

The second problem is that twice, I've gotten a blue screen with the error "Driver power state failure", and one of these blue screens appeared when I was starting the computer, so I had to restart it.

When I got the error the first time (don't remember when), I tried adjusting the power settings from Internet articles; but I'm confused because I have two parts for the option "Maximum performance", that is, when it's plugged in and when it's running on its battery. I've set "plugged in" to "Maximum performance", but I don't know what I would set the "running on battery" part to. Then I got that second error again on startup, so I tried updating all my drivers by searching the Internet for updates (by going through each one), and it turns out none of them need updates.

I haven't gotten the blue screen and same error message since, though don't know if it will show up again.

I thought I would ask the community about updating the BIOS first before making any decision. I'd like to know what you think. I've had these issues for at least a week; overall, your help with any of this will be very much appreciated (and I really thank the people who've helped me so far). Meanwhile, I will continue researching myself.

Thank you,

I appreciate your efforts to try and resolve the issue. I have a few troubleshooting steps we could try to fix the issue:

Perform Windows Update and HP Support Assistant:

To check for updates now, select the Start button, and then go to Settings  > Update & security  > Windows Update, and select Check for updates.Install updates from HP Support Assistant:  Go to Download HP Support Assistant to install the tool.

  1. To open HP Support Assistant, double-click the HP Support Assistant icon https://support.hp.com/doc-images/932/c05040382.jpg.
  2. Click My devices in the top menu, and then click Updates in the My PC or My notebook pane.
  3. Click Check for updates and messages to scan for new updates.
  4. Review the list of updates. Updates with a yellow information icon are recommended. Updates with a blue information icon are optional.
  5. Click the update name for a description, version number, and file size.
  6. Select the box next to any updates you want to install, and then click Download and install.

And, also run BIOS Update: Follow steps from the link: https://support.hp.com/in-en/document/c00042629|

Hope this helps! Keep me posted for further assistance.

Apologies, I know I haven't been online for quite a while. Although I can't update my BIOS at this time, I will accept your answer as the solution. Thank you!
