HP Pavilion Gaming - 15-ec1032nw

I updated windows 11 to 24H2 yesterday and unfortunately found a bug.

Can sometimes crash the display (system works and the screen crashes).

I don't know what I can do about it, but rather the BIOS in this case or the display drivers are responsible.

Windows 11: 24H2 (latest version = 26100.2161)

BIOS: F.34 (02.09.2024)

Disk software: HPS2 (Intel)

Nvidia drivers: 566.03

Processor: AMD Ryzen 4600H

AMD display drivers: 24.9.1 [v.31...] (Polaris & Vega)

Hi @Kamil96500,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

I'd be glad to help you!

I’m sorry to hear about the display crashes after the Windows update—that sounds frustrating, especially with everything else up-to-date. Let’s go through a few questions and steps to troubleshoot.

  • Do you notice if the display crashes happen during specific tasks, like gaming or video playback, or is it random?
  • Have you tried rolling back the display or GPU drivers to a previous version to see if the crashes stop?
  • Does the display restore itself after a crash, or do you have to restart the laptop each time?

Let's try these steps.

1. Update or Roll Back Display and GPU Drivers

  • Open Device Manager (Win + X > Device Manager) and locate your AMD and NVIDIA graphics drivers under Display Adapters.
  • Right-click each driver, select Update driver, and try searching automatically. If no update is found, consider rolling back to the previous version (especially if the issue started right after updating).

2. Perform a Clean Install of Display Drivers

  • Use Display Driver Uninstaller (DDU) in Safe Mode to remove both AMD and NVIDIA drivers fully.
  • Reinstall the latest versions from the official AMD and NVIDIA websites, ensuring compatibility with the 24H2 Windows version.

3. Adjust Power and Display Settings

  • Go to Settings > System > Power & Battery and make sure Power Mode is set to Balanced or Best Performance, as Power Saver mode can sometimes conflict with graphics performance.
  • In Display Settings, disable features like Hardware-Accelerated GPU Scheduling under Graphics settings (if enabled) to see if this reduces crashes.

4. Check for Windows Updates and Hotfixes

  • After a major update like 24H2, there are often follow-up patches to fix bugs. Go to Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update and check for any optional updates that may address this display issue.

5. Consider a BIOS Update or Reset

  • Since BIOS plays a role in hardware stability, check HP’s official site for any BIOS updates newer than F.34, especially if they’re specific to Windows 11 compatibility. If an update isn’t available, you could try resetting the BIOS to default settings to ensure no settings are contributing to display instability.

If these steps don’t stabilize the display, it’s possible that a Windows patch is needed to fully resolve this compatibility issue with 24H2.

Hope this helps! Keep me posted for further assistance

Thank you for your advice!

For now I have reverted to windows 23H2 which does not cause such crashes, I suspect microsoft may be to blame for the random display hangs.

As for the display drivers, I'll have to wait for AMD to release new drivers.
