After a Windows update, my HP Envy laptop ended up in Recovery mode. Although I can exercise many of the options, the computer will not fix itself. Is my only option left to wipe the system and reload?

I would try resetting Windows Update before you do that.

First thing you need to do is see if you can restart in Safe mode -- by doing these steps: https://www.tenforums.com/tutorials/2304-boot-into-safe-mode-windows-10-a.html

If you don't know how to start using Advanced Startup Options, then read this: https://www.tenforums.com/tutorials/2294-boot-advanced-startup-options-windows-10-a.html

Then, follow these steps to reset Windows Update: https://www.tenforums.com/tutorials/24742-reset-windows-update-windows-10-a.html

If these work, when you finally reboot, you should then be able to login to a working Windows desktop.

WAWood,  I can't say for sure, because I am not the most technically savvy person.  However, it seems like I may have tried some of this through the Windows Recovery screen.  By the way, my Windows Recovery screen is different than any I have seen in your references, or any other place I have looked so far.  While I have been able to activate many of the options, i.e. Startup Repair, Uninstall Updates, System Restore, System Image Recovery, and Command Prompt, most of those fail to execute completely, or fail their intended repair.

If you've gone all the way through resetting Windows Update, then what state is it in now?

I really have not, because the Windows Recovery mode will not actually uninstall the updates.  When I select that option, it runs, but fails to do the uninstall.

I have not done a Windows Update reset in a while, but from the link I provided, you download and run a batch file to do the reset.  I don't recall it going into Windows Recovery mode.
