Dear Paul, I am so happy to have found this thread because I am trying to solve similar problem for weeks. Unfortunately, the download links that you provided seems to have expired, probably because HP revamped their websites.
Would you be able to refresh the links? Thanks for your great help!

Thanks for the reply and trying the suggested steps. Have you tried to use HP Support Assistant to update the drivers?
As per the specifications of your computer, the computer came with Windows 8.1. Click here.
Please uninstall the driver from device manager, delete the driver when prompted, and use HPSA to automatically install the driver on your computer.
If the issue persists, please run a component test on your computer. Click here.
Alternately, please update the driver using compatibility mode.
Keep me posted.

Dear Chimney_83,
Thank you for your kind reply. I downgraded my HP Notebook - 14-g115au to Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit. I downloaded and installed Broadcom Wireless LAN Driver sp68506.exe (69MB) from the HP website:
http://ftp.hp.com/pub/softpaq/sp68501-69000/sp68506.exe
https://support.hp.com/us-en/drivers/selfservice/hp-14-g100-notebook-pc-series/7551548/model/7801674
Unfortunately, the error says: "The operating system is not supported. The software will not be installed. Setup will now exit."
I also tried other softpaq's : sp47895, sp71395, sp70888, sp72879 that are the drivers for Braodcom 802.11bgn WLAN Driver windows 7 64 bit. However, after extracting the files, the installation windows just closed itself and nothing happened after that.
My device manager still can't identify BCM43142A0 and PCI Device and have grouped them under Other devices.
Hardware Ids for BCM43142A0
USB\VID_0A5C&PID_216C&REV_0112
USB\VID_0A5C&PID_216C
Hardware Ids for PCI Device
PCI\VEN_10EC&DEV_5229&SUBSYS_21F9103C&REV_01
PCI\VEN_10EC&DEV_5229&SUBSYS_21F9103C
PCI\VEN_10EC&DEV_5229&CC_FF0000
PCI\VEN_10EC&DEV_5229&CC_FF00
Any advice is much appreciated. Thank you.

Thanks for your suggestions. Yes, the laptop came with Windows 8.1, upgraded to Windows 10 but was having repetitive restart issues with these 2 operating systems. So I downgraded it to Windows 7 64-bit.
1. HPSA - I downloaded sp79243.exe from HP website. The installation exits without giving any reason. So I can't use HPSA to install the drivers. This happened when I tried to install the drivers as well. Most of the installation exited without giving any reason.
2. I tried to run a component test following your instructions. The component test is only limited to Hardisk and Memory tests. Hardware test does not appear to be an option.
3. I tried to troubleshoot hardware issues. It said I need to install the driver for my network adapter.
4. Lastly, I installed the driver using compatibility mode. It worked after 2 attempts! The laptop accessed the internet for the first time!
Unfortunately, when I restarted Windows 7, the network adapter driver seems to be NOT working again. The system was not able to identify the driver for network adapter again.
I repeated the steps to re-install the drivers again using compatibility mode, disabled and enabled my network adapter BCM43142 802.11 bgn, and restarted my laptop and it worked again.
Is there something wrong with my hardware, i.e. network adapter? Now, I just put my laptop to hibernate, instead of shutting it down for fear of losing the driver setting. Hibernation doesn't seem to affect the driver setting.
Anyway, thanks for your great help. Couldn't have done it without your help.
