I have a related question. I want to replace the SSD in a  desktop Envy with an SSD of more GB. The pre-installed one is 118 GB, I would prefer one of up to 250 GB. I have made the recovery discs (3) though now I wish I'd bought a stick and put it on that instead (see further conundrum at end of post). Anyway if I switch the SATA and power cables to the new SSD and run the recovery discs, is that all I need to do to install the complete OS (Windows 10 and HP drivers) to the new SSD and still have a working computer? This would surely be much simpler than cloning the old SSD. My other question/conundrum is the only time I ever put a dvd into the Envy internal dvd drive it got stuck in there (I'm told the drive is actually a LAPTOP drive they are now throwing into the desktops). I had to uninstall the drive to free the dvd and then put the drive back in. Since then I've only used an external Pioneer blu-ray drive for dvds and blu-ray including burning the recovery discs. My question is can I use the external Pioneer drive to install the recovery discs or do I risk something being done (partitioning or other)  to the external Pioneer drive. If I have to use the Envy internal drive, I guess I can try turning the CPU on its side hoping to avoid the stuck dvd problem. Thanks for any help!

Hello @ztz

I take it you have an HP Desktop PC (this section of the forum is for laptops).

It helps to post the full model number of the PC so we will better know what we are dealing with.

But I think I get the jist of what you  are asking.

" if I switch the SATA and power cables to the new SSD and run the recovery discs, is that all I need to do to install the complete OS "

Yes, you will want to switch the sata/power cable to the new SSD to install the recovery setup.

"can I use the external Pioneer drive to install the recovery discs "

Yes, it wont matter which dvd drive you use, a dvd drive is a dvd drive. Same as it wouldnt matter what USB port you use to connect USB windows flash drive installer.

Be sure to not have any other drives connected during the installation, just the new SSD.

Let me know if you have other questions.
