Hello @NGSIAWHAI

Thank you for posting in the HP Support forum.  Thank you for choosing HP - you have made a great choice.

==================

Please, note that this model originally comes with Windows 10 Home. If you format the storage (HDD) drive, you will loose the WIndows 10 installation. If you want, you can create your own recovery media first before proceeding with Ubuntu installation should you decide to restore Windows in some time in the future. You will need free/blank external USB drive or USB HDD to store the image of Windows to.

Here are instructions for this:

==================

With regards to your original request for Linux / Ubuntu

* You will need :

- either 1 empty/blank USB thumb drive

- Linux based operating system of your choice - free to download - e.g. Ubuntu or Linux Mint

* You can directly download Ubuntu Desktop from Ubuntu's web site:

Download the x64 ISO > https://www.ubuntu.com/download/desktop

Once ready, you need to write the ISO to make a bootable media (e.g. bootable DVD or USB drive). Here is how:

>> How to create bootable ISO on USB device >> http://www.ubuntu.com/download/desktop/create-a-usb-stick-on-windows

* * * When ready with the USB drive:

* Enter the BIOS (F10)

* Ensure Secure Boot is disabled

* Ensure Legacy mode is enabled

* Save the UEFI/BIOS changes.

Details>> http://support.hp.com/us-en/document/c03653226

>> https://support.hp.com/us-en/document/c03736054

* Eventually, please, shutdown the computer using the power button.

Insert the Ubuntu USB thumdrive prepared previously

Power on the PC.

As soon as you press the power-on button, keep hitting the Esc button (like tap-tap-tap).

This should open a HP Startup Menu

Choose F9 to open Boot options. Select the thumb drive USB as boot option.

Follow the on-screen instructions to run Ubuntu for a test or install Ubuntu.

Ubuntu should load.

Thank you so much for your guidances. I had successfully install ubuntu 17.04. Everything worked except the Bluetooth device. Do you know how to fix it in ubuntu? And sometimes my wireless connection is quite slow, any solution for this? Thanks.

Hello @NGSIAWHAI

It depends on what it is caused of.

Can you open Terminal and type   sudo rfkill list

Hit ENTER and confirm your password.

Do you see the Bluetooth icon in your system tray (usually in the upper right section) ?

Why did you choose Ubuntu 17.04 instead of the Ubuntu 16 LTS version ?

It might be driver missing from the Kernel and version 16 uses different kernel ? You may also try using an older kernel with Ubuntu 14 LTS version.

Looking forward to your reply.

Hi, I run the command in terminal, and get this

nsh@nsh:~$ sudo rfkill list
[sudo] password for nsh:
0: phy0: Wireless LAN
Soft blocked: no
Hard blocked: no
1: brcmwl-0: Wireless LAN
Soft blocked: no
Hard blocked: no
2: hci0: Bluetooth
Soft blocked: no
Hard blocked: no

The bluetooth icon shown in the taskbar. But the problem is when I click the Bluetooth setting to add bluetooth device, the bluetooth mouse didn't show up. I try with other laptop the bluetooth device shown in another laptop. Is it because the driver problem? Please advice.

Hi,

Thank you for following the steps. The device itself is found and seems to be visible for the PC. It is also not blocked or disabled, so it should be fine and not related to the drivers/kernel. It is probably some setting.

Could you review these tutorials:

>> https://help.ubuntu.com/stable/ubuntu-help/bluetooth.html

>> https://help.ubuntu.com/stable/ubuntu-help/bluetooth-connect-device.html

and see if anything helps.

If nothing helps, would you be able to post over Ubuntu forums where Ubuntu experts would be able to better assist you. I use Linux primary on my machine but I am not an expert in this field. Thank you for your understanding.

Hi, I try the Bluetooth setting by set it visible, even my handphone and tablet cannot found it. I think may be this version of ubuntu 17.04 not compatible with my laptop. May be I try to reformat it to ubuntu 16.04 LTS as mentioned by you earlier.

HP Recommended

In all cases it would be best to use Long Term Support (LTS) version because it is more stable and has support for longer term (few years). The other versions are more likely an more stable BETA testing versions prior to the official LTS releases.

Try with 16 LTS version or even 14 LTS (14 is even more stable). Let me know how it goes 🙂

Hi, I think I had formatted my laptop to Linux for more than 5 times with failure. I had tried up with ubuntu 17.04, ubuntu LTS 16.04, elementary OS, debian, linux mint, lubuntu, all cannot detect Bluetooth for this model hp 14 am036tx. Lastly I formatted back to Windows 10 and Bluetooth work. I want to ask is this laptop only compatible with Windows 10 and not compatible with Linux? Any Linux distro that will compatible with this model? I think the problem for this model is the wifi and bluetooth is on the same card, is it? Thanks for advice.
