OK, if you are running W8, and not W8.1, see if this updated atheros wifi driver works better than the one that you obtained from the recovery manager.

This package contains the driver installation package for the Qualcomm Atheros QCA9000 Series wireless LAN Controller in the supported notebook models running a supported operating system.

Fix and enhancements:

- Provides the updated driver.

Download and save the applicable driver file.

Double click to run it.  Follow the on screen instructions to install the driver.

Installation should be automatic, and take less than a minute.

Should I get the Driver support & Active Optimization membership?

I'm sorry but I have absolutely no idea what you are referring to regarding the Driver support & Active Optimization membership.

I posted the suggested HP Atheros wifi drivers you should try.  There is no membership application with those.

You run the file, accept the agreement, and click next.  Then the driver installs.
